[type_traits] check for default constructor?

Hello Boosters, how can I detect the presence of a default constructor in a certain class? Using the VC8 compiler, I tried several things but with limited success: has_trivial_constructor<T> only recognizes automatically created constructors, but not explicitely declared ones. has_nothrow_constructor<T> is too restrictive as it requires a throw() declaration. is_convertible<void, T> did not work either. Any ideas or pointers? Am I missing something? Lock-free atomic_shared_ptr<T>?

Porting lock-free data structures from Java is complicated by the fact that the implementations assume garbage collection. There are a few techniques available for dealing with manual memory management without locks, but they complicate the implementation of algorithms that are complex enough already. So I'm thinking about trying to implement an atomic_shared_ptr<T> along the lines of the interface for other atomics defined in http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2007/n2427.html but using shared_ptr<T> as a value type. The implementation I'm thinking of uses hazard pointers (http://erdani.org/publications/cuj-2004-12.pdf) and double-wide-cas (cmpxchg16b on x86-64). So I have three questions for this list: 1) Would there be interest in adding such a type to the Boost smart pointers? 2) Has someone already done this? 3) Is anyone already working on an implementation of atomic<T> from N2427? I'm unlikely to need the whole thing, so even a half-completed public repository would be helpful. Thanks, Jeffrey Yasskin

Quick Allocator Static Destruction Bug

I have encountered a bug when using BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR with shared_ptr<> objects that are contained in a static container. This bug is verifiable with Visual Studio 2005 SP1 as well as MinGW GCC 4.2.1. As an example, I have created a static std::map, which pairs a long with a boost::shared_ptr<>. This is the scenario where I first encountered the bug. The boost preprocessor definition BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR is defined. When the program exists, the application crashes during deallocation of the shared_ptrs. Under Visual Studio 2005, MSVCR80d.dllcrashes during _free_dbg() (and likewise MSVCR80.dll crashes during _free()). If the map is made a regular member instead of a static member, the program exits properly. In addition, if the boost quick allocator is disabled, the program exits properly. In my testing, I have found the key type is irrelevant, and what the shared_ptr points to also does not matter. The issue is with the Quick Allocator and the runtime cleanup of static objects. In boost\detail\quick_allocator.hpp, put breakpoints in allocator_impl<size, align_>'s (4) mutex(), (5) alloc(), and (6) dealloc(). Run the program. (5) [alloc()] fires. We're constructing class1, which is constructing a shared_ptr. (4) [mutex()] fires, as alloc() calls mutex(). (1) [lightweight_mutex's ctor] fires, as mutex() constructs a static lightweight_mutex. (3) [scoped_lock's ctor] fires, as alloc() then constructs a scoped_lock from the static lightweight_mutex. (5), (4), and (3) then fire as we construct class2 (the static lightweight_mutex has already been constructed, so (1) doesn't run again.) (2) [lightweight_mutex's dtor] fires, as we exit main() and destroy the static lightweight_mutex. (6) [dealloc()] fires, as we exit main() and destroy the static map and its contained shared_ptrs. (4) [mutex()] fires, returning a reference to the destroyed static lightweight_mutex. (3) [scoped_lock's ctor] fires, which calls EnterCriticalSection() with a trashed CRITICAL_SECTION, which causes the program to crash. boost::bind does not trigger template instantiation

HI, in my spirit grammar file, I use boost::bind to bind a template function: boos::bind(&std::vector<uint32_t>::push_back)(my_vector, i); This compiles fine. However, since this is the only usage of std::vector<uint32_t>::push_back, this function is not instantiated and linker complains that this function is not defined. I could write a wrapper function around std::vector<uint32_t> to force its instantiation. My questions is: is there a more elegant solution in this scenario? Yingwei Zhang Powerset

[1.35.0] more/index.html and more/ content

root/more/index.html has disappeared, as has all of the content. That isn't acceptable. Even if much of the content is moved elsewhere, index.html has to continue to exist, so that users can continue to find the content. It is OK for some of the links on root/more/index.html to refer to the web site. It is OK to move content out of the release and into the web site if it is unlikely to be referenced in the process of actually using a release. Any of the content that is likely to used by users of a release must be restored. Releases have to be usable without Internet connectivity. Pages like the License information, How to report bugs, and FAQ have to be part of a release. --Beman

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS 7th Workshop on PARALLEL/HIGH-PERFORMANCE OBJECT-ORIENTED SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING (POOSC'08) at the EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING (ECOOP 2008) Paphos, Cyprus, 7-11 July 2008 http://www.ccs3.lanl.gov/poosc08/ While object-oriented programming is being embraced in industry, particularly in the form of C++ and to an increasing extent Java and Python, its acceptance by the parallel scientific programming community is still tentative. In this latter domain performance is invariably of paramount importance, where even C++ is considered suspect, primarily because of real or perceived loss of performance. On the other hand, various factors practically dictate the use of language features that provide higher level abstractions than do C or older FORTRAN standards. These include increasingly complex physics models, numerical algorithms, and hardware--deep memory hierarchies, exponentially-increasing numbers of processors, and the advent of multi- and many-core processors and heterogeneous architectures. This workshop seeks to bring together practitioners and researchers in this growing field to `compare notes' on their work. The emphasis is on identifying specific problems impeding greater acceptance and widespread use of object-oriented programming in scientific computing; proposed and implemented solutions to these problems; and new or novel approaches, techniques or idioms for scientific and/or parallel computing. Presentations of work in progress are welcome.
