Quick Allocator Static Destruction Bug
by Matt Hunt 26 Feb '08

26 Feb '08

I have encountered a bug when using BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR with shared_ptr<> objects that are contained in a static container. This bug is verifiable with Visual Studio 2005 SP1 as well as MinGW GCC 4.2.1. As an example, I have created a static std::map, which pairs a long with a boost::shared_ptr<>. This is the scenario where I first encountered the bug. The boost preprocessor definition BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR is defined. When the program exists, the application crashes during deallocation of the shared_ptrs. Under Visual Studio 2005, MSVCR80d.dllcrashes during _free_dbg() (and likewise MSVCR80.dll crashes during _free()). If the map is made a regular member instead of a static member, the program exits properly. In addition, if the boost quick allocator is disabled, the program exits properly. In my testing, I have found the key type is irrelevant, and what the shared_ptr points to also does not matter. The issue is with the Quick Allocator and the runtime cleanup of static objects. Here is an example console app. that will produce the problem. ------------------- // Boost Headers #define BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR #include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> // STL Map #include <map> // Test struct for Shared Pointer struct tTestItem { long x; }; // Test Class to use static map class tTestClass { public: tTestClass(long id) { boost::shared_ptr<tTestItem> xTestItem(new tTestItem()); m_TestMap.insert(std::make_pair<long, boost::shared_ptr<tTestItem> >(id, xTestItem)); } private: static std::map<long, boost::shared_ptr<tTestItem> > m_TestMap; }; // Create Static Instance std::map<long, boost::shared_ptr<tTestItem> > tTestClass::m_TestMap; // Simple Main App int main() { tTestClass class1(1); tTestClass class2(2); return 0; } ------------------- Under Visual Studio, the problem can be detected as follows: In boost\detail\lwm_win32_cs.hpp, put breakpoints in (1) lightweight_mutex's ctor, (2) lightweight_mutex's dtor, and (3) scoped_lock's ctor. In boost\detail\quick_allocator.hpp, put breakpoints in allocator_impl<size, align_>'s (4) mutex(), (5) alloc(), and (6) dealloc(). Run the program. (5) [alloc()] fires. We're constructing class1, which is constructing a shared_ptr. (4) [mutex()] fires, as alloc() calls mutex(). (1) [lightweight_mutex's ctor] fires, as mutex() constructs a static lightweight_mutex. (3) [scoped_lock's ctor] fires, as alloc() then constructs a scoped_lock from the static lightweight_mutex. (5), (4), and (3) then fire as we construct class2 (the static lightweight_mutex has already been constructed, so (1) doesn't run again.) (2) [lightweight_mutex's dtor] fires, as we exit main() and destroy the static lightweight_mutex. (6) [dealloc()] fires, as we exit main() and destroy the static map and its contained shared_ptrs. (4) [mutex()] fires, returning a reference to the destroyed static lightweight_mutex. (3) [scoped_lock's ctor] fires, which calls EnterCriticalSection() with a trashed CRITICAL_SECTION, which causes the program to crash. Please let me know if I am misusing boost functionality in the above test application. Sincerely, Matthew Hunt

boost::bind does not trigger template instantiation
by Yingwei Zhang 26 Feb '08

26 Feb '08

HI, in my spirit grammar file, I use boost::bind to bind a template function: boos::bind(&std::vector<uint32_t>::push_back)(my_vector, i); This compiles fine. However, since this is the only usage of std::vector<uint32_t>::push_back, this function is not instantiated and linker complains that this function is not defined. I could write a wrapper function around std::vector<uint32_t> to force its instantiation. My questions is: is there a more elegant solution in this scenario? Yingwei Zhang Powerset

program_options bug
by Lev Borovoi 26 Feb '08

26 Feb '08

I've found the following bug in program_options: When printing the options syntax, if it doesn't fit in one line, the library crashes. Here is a minimal reproduction: options_description opts; opts.add_options()("option", "A very long description. A very long description. A very long description. A very long description. A very long description."); cout << opts; I work on XP professional x64 SP1 and use Boost 1.33.1

[1.35.0] more/index.html and more/ content
by Beman Dawes 25 Feb '08

25 Feb '08

root/more/index.html has disappeared, as has all of the content. That isn't acceptable. Even if much of the content is moved elsewhere, index.html has to continue to exist, so that users can continue to find the content. It is OK for some of the links on root/more/index.html to refer to the web site. It is OK to move content out of the release and into the web site if it is unlikely to be referenced in the process of actually using a release. Any of the content that is likely to used by users of a release must be restored. Releases have to be usable without Internet connectivity. Pages like the License information, How to report bugs, and FAQ have to be part of a release. --Beman

CfP: ECOOP workshop Parallel/High-performance Object-Oriented Scientific Computing
by Kei Davis 25 Feb '08

25 Feb '08

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS 7th Workshop on PARALLEL/HIGH-PERFORMANCE OBJECT-ORIENTED SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING (POOSC'08) at the EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING (ECOOP 2008) Paphos, Cyprus, 7-11 July 2008 http://www.ccs3.lanl.gov/poosc08/ While object-oriented programming is being embraced in industry, particularly in the form of C++ and to an increasing extent Java and Python, its acceptance by the parallel scientific programming community is still tentative. In this latter domain performance is invariably of paramount importance, where even C++ is considered suspect, primarily because of real or perceived loss of performance. On the other hand, various factors practically dictate the use of language features that provide higher level abstractions than do C or older FORTRAN standards. These include increasingly complex physics models, numerical algorithms, and hardware--deep memory hierarchies, exponentially-increasing numbers of processors, and the advent of multi- and many-core processors and heterogeneous architectures. This workshop seeks to bring together practitioners and researchers in this growing field to `compare notes' on their work. The emphasis is on identifying specific problems impeding greater acceptance and widespread use of object-oriented programming in scientific computing; proposed and implemented solutions to these problems; and new or novel approaches, techniques or idioms for scientific and/or parallel computing. Presentations of work in progress are welcome. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: * tried or proposed programming language alternatives to C++; * performance issues and their realized or proposed resolution; * issues specific to handling or abstracting parallelism, including the handling or abstraction of heterogeneous architectures; * specific points of concern for progress and acceptance of object-oriented scientific computing; * existing, developing, or proposed software; * frameworks and tools for scientific object-oriented computing; * schemes for user-level fault tolerance; * grand visions (of relevance). The workshop will consist of a sequences of presentations each followed by a discussion session. The workshop will conclude with an overall discussion. We expect the majority of the participants to give presentations. For authors of accepted presentations who require justification for travel the organizers can provide official letters of invitation. PUBLICATION Full papers accepted to the workshop will be published as a proceedings either in the Springer LNCS series or in the John von Neumann Institute for Computing NIC series, Forschungszentrum Juelich. Additionally, it is possible that a summary of the workshop will be published as an ECOOP Workshop Reader in Springer's LNCS series. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Prospective authors are invited to submit abstracts, papers, or presentations (slides) in ASCII, PDF, postscript, or PowerPoint. Submitted materials will be distributed at the workshop. Submission and email correspondence to poosc08(a)lanl.gov AUTHORS' SCHEDULE May 4, 2008: Initial submissions due May 19, 2008: Notification of acceptance Jun 15, 2008: Final materials to be distributed due Jul 7 or 8, 2008: Workshop TBD, 2008: Final papers for publication due ORGANIZATION This workshop is a joint organization by Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA; and the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg, Germany. [boost] [date_time][thread][string][python][mpi][typeof][function_types] License links in copyright comments
by Daniel James 25 Feb '08

25 Feb '08

Hello all, I've prepared my patches to fix several links to the copyright files. There's a lot of changes, so I've put the patches on the web instead of attaching the patches. I've got three separate patches for fixing different errors. If there are no objections I'll commit them to trunk and release in a few days. First patch is for headers which link to the non-existant LICENSE-1.0. It touches the date time, thread and string algorithm libraries: http://unordered.nfshost.com/x/copyright1.patch The next one fixes links 'http:#www.boost.org/LICENSE_1_0.txt' which seems to be a search and replace error when converting C++ header comments to python. This one is for the python and mpi libraries. http://unordered.nfshost.com/x/copyright2.patch Finally there are a handful of links of the form http:/\/www.boost.org/LICENSE_1_0.txt. These are in the typeof and function types libraries. http://unordered.nfshost.com/x/copyright3.patch There's another link of that form in the script 'libs/typeof/tools/preprocess.pl' but I left it alone as it might be correctly escaped. Very problem oriented and helping to abstract the platform specifics. * What is your evaluation of the implementation? I didn't look at the code in detail. * What is your evaluation of the documentation? Sufficient. * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? Very useful. In fact Joel and I are using the floating point classification and sign-bit routines in SpiritV2 (for both, parsing and generation), and it turned out to be a huge time saver for us. * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? Yes, SpiritV2 is using it. We tried with different versions of gcc, intel and msvc (mainly on windows) * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? Essentially no extra time. I'm reporting what I've learned while writing the Spirit code. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Using this library helped me to understand some of the problems in this domain. I'm not considering myself to be an expert, though. * Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? Definitely, yes. Regards Hartmut

Hi John, I'm using the Math Toolkit in a statistics app. It works great; you have have done a fantastic job. I minor suggestion: Why not let pdf and cdf accept infinity and negative infinity when the corresponding limits exist? --Johan
