Hi to all, The Unordered library submitted by Daniel James has been *accepted* into Boost. Thanks to all reviewers and all who contributed to the library before the review. We've received 8 reviews (Thosten Ottosen, Chun Ping Wang, Hervé Brönnimann, John Torjo, Cromwell Enage, Jamie Allsop, Graham Mark and Paul Bristow), and all were positive (since Chun's only complain was packaging and his ratings were all above 7 out of 10). Darren Cook privately sent me a positive mini-review (attached below). If I've missed any review, please let me know. E.g. on http://igaztanaga.drivehq.com/unordered/unordered/buckets.html If I find time I will try out the library and write a review in the week, but here is a mini-review (feel free to forward to the list - I'm not subscribed at the moment): Documentation: * Fine * The concrete examples of how to use a custom type, and a custom hash function, and do everything in portable TR1, are wonderful - I've searched before and never been able to find something as clear as this seems to be. * In Table 1.4: "No equivalent. No idea why." is not very Boost-like :-) . Yes. It is essential it gets into Boost as rapidly as possible; in fact I think it should be released as a patch to the current release. Having all of TR1 except for the hashed containers is a nasty red pimple on the otherwise very handsome nose of Boost. In particular, Visual C++ *still* does not ship with TR1 ("no plans until 2009" was the rumour I found), so anyone wanting to ship portable code is relying on Boost. And, at least for me, unordered_map is the single most useful library in TR1. Darren

But it's not at all fine for what the general matrix-using population wants. As an example of a library that *does* try to fill all those needs, look at Boost's very own UBlas. Flexible, has all the options covered... and IMHO rather difficult to use, and also rather slow. An an example of a library that probably does exactly what you want, but way way fast, look at 'tvmet'. My point is, I guess, that general-purpose one-size-fits-all libraries have historically been hard to use and slow; libraries that are easy to use and fast are not applicable to all uses. I personally think this issue is rather fundamental to the "computer linear algebra" problem, and nobody has yet come up with The Good Solution (not for lack of work). (BTW, I think that UBlas + template typedefs [in whatever form we get them] will grow up to be a big, strong, fast, and very useful library some day. [1.35] what gets built and installed?

If I do a: bjam stage --toolset=msvc-8.0 --with-regex Then with 1.35 I don't get any static libraries built, just the dll's. Was this a deliberate change somewhere? It's a problem because the default for auto-linking is to look for static rather than dynamic libraries. John.

The following change broke Boost.Asio library on HP-UX ia64 aCC (runner HP-UX_ia64_aCC). The library used to be green on the trunk and is still green on release branch. [lib maintainers] Please identify headers in boost-root/boost

For the headers that appear in boost-root/boost, rather than a library specific subdirectory, it is very helpful if they self-identify what library they belong to. This allows scripts to associate the header with a library. The usual way to do this is to include a comment. A typical example: // See http://www.boost.org/libs/config for documentation The exact format doesn't matter. What does matter is that the library name be found somewhere in the file, immediately following a string which contains "/libs/". Below is the result of doing: grep -L "/libs/" *.h* I'd appreciate maintainers adding a library identifying comment to these files. Otherwise I'll do it, which carries a slight risk that I'll get it wrong. Possible bug in Unit Testing routines

In trying to track down a memory leak with my code (using Deleaker, VS2005, Windows XP, boost 1.34.1 from boost consulting), I'm getting the folowing message as being the source of a memory leak. This partiular list, shows the line where the memory was allocated. My question is, is this a valid error, or one I should just ignore? Boost for new compiler

Hi, I apologize if this is a FAQ - I couldn't find much on other compilers I am interested in using boost with a compiler for a DSP - The compiler is somewhat archaic - I'm not using RTTI or exceptions (the compiler supports them but it is currently broken) - the STL has old iostreams and no doubt I will find some other musty corners. I don't have any illusions about getting the whole of boost to compile but I'm sure there are some large pieces that will work OK. I have no problem doing the port myself. I have successfully got shared_ptr and shared_array to work but I needed to make 3 fairly trivial changes to the code to get it to compile. Are boosters interested in folding these changes back into the main source in the interests of making boost more portable or am I on my own here since I am working with an unsupported compiler? I can post the problems I ran into if anyone is interested. Andrew
