[random] normal_distribution, cartesian form of box-muller transform
by Marcus Bannerman 18 Nov '07

18 Nov '07

Hello, I have adapted the current normal_distribution from the polar form to the outward Cartesian form. See here http://web.mat.bham.ac.uk/marijke/bm/yabm.pdf listing the benefits of the Cartesian form for the distribution of numbers. This also eliminates trigonometric function calls, however, it does reject pairs of random numbers. Most websites (wolfram, wikipedia) state that the inward Cartesian form is faster but this is generator speed dependent. I've found with my tests (mt19937, double datatype, gcc (GCC) 4.1.3 20070929 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2), -O2) its about 1.5x slower than the polar form. Although with faster generators I expect it to outperform the polar version. I think this is an improvement on the current normal_distribution.hpp in time critical situations (if a fast generator is used) and it gives a better distribution of numbers, (points rather than bands of inaccessible numbers). I have also found that this version doesn't produce the "may be used uninitialised" warning when compiling with optimisations that I get when I use the original. Please let me know if you think of any other improvements or spot any errors. I will use this in my code however I would like to give something back. I'm not sure what to do with the copyright at the top of the file and I'm not sure if this is the correct way to submit this for review. Apologies in advance if I have made a mistake. [rfc] getting the dataflow library ready for submission
by Stjepan Rajko 18 Nov '07

18 Nov '07

Hello all, I am getting close to having the Dataflow library ready to be submitted for review, and would like to respark some interest. The current version of the library offers a generic layer for dataflow programming that can be applied to various data transport mechanisms, and a Dataflow.Signals support layer for Boost.Signals that provides a number of general-purpose components and easy connectability. In the near future I will try to put together more real-world examples of how this library can be useful, but for now the docs have two possibly interesting examples: * an example of how to provide a support layer for another mechanism, with VTK as the victim. * an example of how to use the Dataflow.Signals layer with Boost.Asio and Boost.Serialization to make a distributed dataflow network. The docs are uploaded to: http://dancinghacker.com/code/dataflow/ Code is available from the boost sandbox (SOC/2007/signals), as well as the boost vault (Dataflow directory). All tests (with 1 exception) pass on GCC 4.0.1/darwin and MSVC8. The docs (and the library to some extent) still need work, but I hope what's out there is good enough to paint a picture of what this library is about and how it might be useful. All feedback is welcome! I will next work on an example that uses Boost.GIL to construct an image processing dataflow network. Best regards, Stjepan

[program_options] warning in options_description::find_nothrow
by Maurizio Vitale 17 Nov '07

17 Nov '07

w.r.t boost HEAD and GCC 4.2.1 in function find_nothrow (line 298) the following fragment appear: if (approximate_matches.size() > 1) boost::throw_exception( ambiguous_option(name, approximate_matches)); else return found.get(); GCC issues a warning about control flow reaching the end of a non-void function. boost::throw_exception is visible to the compiler and it could determine that it _always_ throws. But GCC doesn't. For GCC (and probably the Intel compiler) it would be possible to attach an __attribute__((noreturn)) to the declaration of throw_exception, but this wouldn't be portable. Would it be acceptable to return a fake pointer after the call to throw_exception? We know we'd never get there and the warning would be turned off, a big plus for those using boost in a local directory and insisting on compiling with -Wall and -Werror. Best regards, Maurizio

Cross-Posting: Anyone know how to force a universal or at least Intel static build?
by Daniel Lord 17 Nov '07

17 Nov '07

I already tried the users list for Boost so I am cross-posting this. When I perform an "out-of-the-box" build on my Macbook Pro (Intel dual core) on Leopard (10.5) i get a motley collection of ppc and intel binaries that are useless on my Intel-based system unless I want to use the dynamic libraries only. None of the libraries are universal binaries and only the dynamic libraries are for the i386 architecture (see lipo output below). $lipo -detailed_info libboost_regex* input file libboost_regex-1_34_1.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-1_34_1.dylib is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-d-1_34_1.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-d-1_34_1.dylib is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-d.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-mt-1_34_1.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-mt-1_34_1.dylib is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-mt-d-1_34_1.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-mt-d-1_34_1.dylib is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-mt-d.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex-mt.a is not a fat file input file libboost_regex.a is not a fat file Non-fat file: libboost_regex-1_34_1.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-1_34_1.dylib is architecture: i386 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-d-1_34_1.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-d-1_34_1.dylib is architecture: i386 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-d.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-mt-1_34_1.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-mt-1_34_1.dylib is architecture: i386 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-mt-d-1_34_1.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-mt-d-1_34_1.dylib is architecture: i386 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-mt-d.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex-mt.a is architecture: ppc7400 Non-fat file: libboost_regex.a is architecture: ppc7400 I made the assumption that Boost would, as a default, build for the native architecture it was building one since most of the other libraries I use have been doing that for nearly 2 years. My mistake. To have it build ppc on an intel platform--that was completely unexpected at this late date. The jam user configuration is very simple gives not hint of why bjam builds static ppc and dynamic intel binaries. ugh. What a mystery to someone who knows little about bjam. Searching the Boost site for the key word "universal binaries" found nothing. Searching for "universal OS X" gave four generic uses of the word "universal" but nothing of help. Anybody have any experience building Boost as a universal library set? If not... It's been over a year since I had to hack a build so I need to refresh my memory. It my well be time to pour another cup of java, take the red pill, and see how deep the rabbiit hole goes.

[Signals] Patch for VS 2008
by Jared McIntyre 17 Nov '07

17 Nov '07

I was having issues building certain parts of the Signals library in Visual Studio 2008 b2. It was mentioned elsewhere, but I didn't see a proposed fix. Here are the patches against trunk to get it building again. Index: named_slot_map.hpp =================================================================== --- named_slot_map.hpp (revision 41161) +++ named_slot_map.hpp (working copy) @@ -127,7 +127,7 @@ || slot_ == other.slot_)); } -#if BOOST_WORKAROUND(_MSC_VER, <= 1400) +#if BOOST_WORKAROUND(_MSC_VER, <= 1500) void decrement(); void advance(difference_type); #endif Index: named_slot_map.cpp =================================================================== --- named_slot_map.cpp (revision 41161) +++ named_slot_map.cpp (working copy) @@ -24,7 +24,7 @@ typedef slot_container_type::const_iterator const_group_iterator; -#if BOOST_WORKAROUND(_MSC_VER, <= 1400) +#if BOOST_WORKAROUND(_MSC_VER, <= 1500) void named_slot_map_iterator::decrement() { assert(false); } void named_slot_map_iterator::advance(difference_type) { assert(false); } #endif As you can see, the changes are simple and just bring the workaround check up to the newest build version. I realize that this isn't the final release I'm running against, but given the history here, I would be very surprised if this wasn't necessary in the final build. Jared

utf8_codecvt_facet::do_length() signature
by Maurizio Vitale 16 Nov '07

16 Nov '07

w.r.t boost in HEAD and GCC 4.2.1: boost/details/utf8_codecvt_facet.hpp specifies do_length as do_length(const mbstate_t&, const char*, const char*, size_t) const the first const comes from the expansion of the macro BOOST_CODECVT_DO_LENGTH_CONST, which is defined in the same file as: #if !defined(__MSL_CPP__) && !defined(__LIBCOMO__) #define BOOST_CODECVT_DO_LENGTH_CONST const #else #define BOOST_CODECVT_DO_LENGTH_CONST #endif But in GCC 4.2.1 do_length is defined in /usr/include/c++/4.2.1/bits/codecvt.h without the const specifier. This causes a warning. When boost is installed in system include directories this warning is typically masked (unless you use -Wsystem-headers). But people having boost in their own directory (say as a fallback strategy when boost is not found on the system) would see the warning. And if the use -Werror their compilations would stop. I don't know what the standard prescribes for do_length, but at least from the time being GCC should be added to the list of exceptions when defining BOOST_CODECVT_DO_LENGTH_CONST (or if most libraries define the non-const version have that as default and make exceptions for toolchain that have the const specifier. I haven't checked how boost tests are set up, but if they are only run on libraries installed in system directories it might be useful to add tests for when boost is installed locally. This would catch problems like the above. Thanks for the great job on boost and hope this fix can be added to the new release. Best regards, Maurizio

[filesystem] add directory begin() and end()
by v2cechura 16 Nov '07

16 Nov '07

[-- I crosspost this message to Boost Users List by mistake yesterday --] I would like to suggest adding functions (template functions?) that would return "begin" and "end" iterators for given path. I think that it's clearer to see: for_each(directory_begin( dir_path ), directory_end(), do_something()); than: for_each(directory_iterator( dir_path ), directory_iterator(), do_somethig()); The functions directory_begin()/directory_end() would mimic the convenient container.begin()/container.end() functions used in STL. I know that it's merely a decoration but so is std::make_pair. It could just be: template <class Path> inline class basic_directory_iterator<Path> directory_begin(const Path& dp) { return basic_directory_iterator<Path>(dp); } template <class Path> inline class basic_directory_iterator<Path> directory_end() { return basic_directory_iterator<Path>(); } Vaclav Cechura

[thread] TSS Cleanup fixes
by Anthony Williams 16 Nov '07

16 Nov '07

Hi, The attached patch changes the way that TSS cleanup is done. I believe this will fix the problems being experienced with using LoadLibrary, and with the thread_specific_ptr destructor being run before all the TSS data has been cleaned up (e.g. in boost wave). Please could people check that this fixes the problems they are experiencing. If it does, I will commit this to trunk.
