[rfc] Flyweight library
by "JOAQUIN LOPEZ MU?Z" 14 Nov '07

Hi all, After a year since the last published draft, I think the flyweight library I'm working on is in a sufficiently polished state to issue a request for comments on its usefulness and eventual suitability for inclusion into the Boost review queue. * Abstract: Flyweights are small-sized handle classes granting constant access to shared common data, thus allowing for the management of large amounts of entities within reasonable memory limits. Boost.Flyweight makes it easy to use this common programming idiom by providing the class template flyweight<T>, which acts as a drop-in replacement for const T. * Design: The flyweight library is a relatively small piece of software that tries to combine both maximum simplicity of usage for casual users and great flexibility for those programmers needing to control aspects of the implementation. Configuration and customization rely upon a very extensive policy interface, whose syntax is kept under control thanks to the Boost Parameter Library. The following aspects can be controlled: - Specification and parameterization of the so-called flyweight factory. - Control of the factory instantiation procedure. - Specification of the internal synchronization mechanisms. - Flyweight tracking, allowing for the disposal of stored values when no longer referenced by any flyweight object. The library provides a catalog of plug-in components, but the user can also supply her own as the needed concepts are publicly documented. In particular, an insidious problem with duplication of flyweight factories across dynamic modules is taken care of by a component called intermodule_holder, whose implementation is based on Boost.Interprocess. * Download: Boost Vault, folder Patterns (http://tinyurl.com/hrdm6 ), file flyweight.zip. * Online docs: http://tinyurl.com/2jbucf . * Usage: Will only work with the trunk version of Boost, daily snapshot at http://boost-consulting.com/boost.tar.bz2 . Currently, serialization capabilities are not working, pending the resolution of the issue exposed at http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/09/127065.php . * Tested on: GCC 3.4.4 on mingw, MSVC++ 8.0. Comments, suggestions, cricitisms, are most welcome. I would also like to know if there's interest in having this included in the review queue. Thank you, Joaquín M López Muñoz Telefónica, Investigación y Desarrollo

I'd like to derive a serialization class which can write directly into a database, which would bypass saving to XML then importing into a database. Obviously the derived class would have to resolve the nested table issue. I think the XML serialization would be useful to more people if it didn't create different tables with the same name. Drew

[1.35.0] Merge tag question?
by Beman Dawes 14 Nov '07

14 Nov '07

Under CVS, we tagged files in the trunk "merged_to_RC_1_34_0" at the time of branching for release, and then updated the location of that tag if a later version of the file got merged into the release branch. This allows library maintainers to know what has been merged and what hasn't. What should the procedure be for Subversion? Does Subversion have an equivalent to updating the location of a tag for a subset of files? Or is tagging completely the wrong approach for Subversion? Should we be using svnmerge.py instead and letting its merge tracking handle the need to keep track of what has been merged and what hasn't? I suspect we need to get this right the first time, so I'd particularly like to hear from people who have dealt with this in practice, and can report what worked well for them. Thanks, --Beman

Boost -> Jolt Award Nominee?
by Marc Mutz 14 Nov '07

14 Nov '07

Hei, I've just came across the on DDJ for nominations for the 2007 Jolt Award. Personally, I think that Boost is one of the biggest productivity boosts there is for C++ programmers, having had a large part in the definition of the next C++ standard, yadda, yadda. It is a shame that it has never in it's almost-10-year existence featured there. However, much to my dismay, one can't simply nominate one's favorite tool, the tool manufacturer has to do it. So, is there any interest from The Boosters to do this, despite the entry fee? Thanks, Marc -- Marc Mutz - marc(a)kdab.com, mutz(a)kde.org - Klarälvdalens Datakonsult AB Platform-independent software solutions - www.kdab.com info(a)kdab.com

compile boost 1.34.1 x64 within Win64
by muffmolch＠gmx.de 14 Nov '07

14 Nov '07

Hi there Am I the only one who's trying to compile boost-libs witih Win64 (AMD64)? I cannot to compile the boost-libs within Win64 as 64bit libs. There aren't any precompiled libraries as for x32? Bjam doesn't have this option, too. So is there anywhere a manual how to compile the 1.3..x boost libraries within WinXP 64 and MSVC8? We use the cl- and sometimes the ippc9.1-compiler. Maybe someone has some compiled libs and can offer them to me. Boost::Serialization (XML in specific)
by Drew Hohmann 14 Nov '07

14 Nov '07

I am saving multiple classes which contain STL collections, and in turn those STL collections contain classes that contain more STL collections. A sample XML file follows. The problem occurs when I try and move the XML file into a database, and I receive the error "The table (item) cannot be the child table to itself in nested relations." In the collections_save_imp.hpp file, under the save_collection function, the key line is ar << boost::serialization::make_nvp("item", *it++); I was thinking of instead of using the constant string "item" when saving a STL collection, to keep track of the parent table name, and modify the string based on the parent name. For example, under animals item would be changed to "animals_item", under trials would be changed to "trials_item", and under platforms would be changed to "platforms_item". Is this the correct way to solve my problem, and if so does anyone have any suggestions on how to implement it? Thanks, Drew Hohmann Software Engineer <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?> <!DOCTYPE boost_serialization> <boost_serialization signature="serialization::archive" version="4"> <project class_id="0" tracking_level="0" version="1"> <m_name>New Project</m_name> <animals class_id="1" tracking_level="0" version="0"> <count>1</count> <item_version>1</item_version> <item class_id="2" tracking_level="0" version="1"> <m_name>test</m_name> <m_gender>Male</m_gender> <m_species></m_species> <m_strain></m_strain> </item> </animals> <trials class_id="3" tracking_level="0" version="0"> <count>8</count> <item_version>1</item_version> <item class_id="4" tracking_level="0" version="1"> <trialinfo class_id="5" tracking_level="0" version="1"> <m_trial_type></m_trial_type> <platforms class_id="7" tracking_level="0" version="0"> <count>1</count> <item_version>1</item_version> <item class_id="8" tracking_level="0" version="1"> <circle class_id="9" tracking_level="0" version="1"> <m_x>86</m_x> <m_y>80</m_y> </circle> <m_name>p1</m_name> <m_platformtype>0</m_platformtype> </item>

[unordered] status update?
by Jamie Allsop 14 Nov '07

14 Nov '07

I was wondering what the current status of unordered was. I don't see it scheduled for review so I assume none has yet been requested? I'd particularly like to see this make it into boost::tr1 if accepted. Needless to say this is a very important library. I notice recent changes in boost sandbox so I'd appreciate an update on intent from Daniel ( if you have the time ;) ). Thanks, Jamie

There are a few regression problems for GIL running on some more exotic platforms - OSF1, SunOS, HP-UX. http://beta.boost.org/development/tests/trunk/developer/gil_release.html We don't have access to these platforms. Perhaps someone who does could give us a hand in fixing these issues? Thanks, Lubomir
