How to convert from a standard factory to an object factory using boost shared pointers?

PROBLEM: How to use Boost shared_ptr for returning the new Component object from an object factory? DESCRIPTION: I have a class which is acting as a factory for all the components in a system. The problem is that this class is getting large and I am concerned about its future growth. My idea is to switch to using an object factory which has a map of registered components. So I would rather not have this. The code to create the object is placed in a function in the object's class. That way the object is responsible for creating a copy of itself. The problem is that I am not sure how to use the boost shared pointer here. I have no problem changing the Component* places to have a boost::shared_ptr<Component>. Its the callback function signature that has me stumped. typedef component::Component* (*CreateComponentCallback)(); Do I simply do: typedef boost::shared_ptr<component::Component> (*CreateComponentCallback)(); What about the callback function? Can I replace that with the operator() in each of the classes so that I can replace the static Create function? I would like to make a purely virtual function in the Component class that requires the child class to have the operator() function for creating a new instance of the child class. Dear All: when I create a message queue named with "Global\\abc",there is a interprocess exception,said that "The system cannot find the path specified." but if I named it "abc",it can be created My Os is Windows XP,because I want to use message queue between service and applicaiton,I must create a global shared memory. is there somebody can help me tackle with the problem? thanks a lot. is it an error of naming rule? Hello, I am requesting comments, both for and against a "sticky exception". A sticky exception is one in which once thrown, is very hard to catch and handle, without an implicit rethrow. This represents some condition which the thrower believes is sufficiently severe that the application (or thread) should clean up resources, but not be allowed to continue, even with a catch (...) which does not rethrow. This can be implemented very simply with a class that owns the right to rethrow on destruct, and passes that right along within its copy constructor: class sticky_exception { bool owns_; sticky_exception& operator=(const sticky_exception&); public: sticky_exception() : owns_(true) {} sticky_exception(sticky_exception& s) : owns_(s.owns_) {s.owns_ = false;} // sticky_exception(sticky_exception&& s) : owns_(s.owns_) {s.owns_ = false;} ~sticky_exception() {if (owns_) {sticky_exception s; throw s;}} }; Please go ahead and experiment with such an exception. I would like to hear your experiences both good and bad. Hi, Some algorithms doesn't work with empty boost::tuple. To upload Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) images to the Sandbox do I simply update my local subversion configuration (as mentioned here http://tinyurl.com/2zqoqm) to include the MIME details for SVG files or will something need to be updated on the server as well? As mentioned at http://tinyurl.com/2dteq2 RFC 3023 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3023.txt) has this to say about the SVG MIME type: ---------- RFC info on SVG ------------- 8.19 Image/svg+xml Content-type: image/svg+xml <?xml version="1.0" ?> Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) documents are XML documents whose content describes graphical information, as defined by [SVG]. As a format based on XML, SVG documents SHOULD use the '+xml' suffix convention in their MIME content-type identifier.
