I vote to accept the library into Boost. * What is your evaluation of the design? * What is your evaluation of the implementation? The design and implementation is clear and straightforward. Of course we'd like to have such a library with better syntax, but current C++ doesn't allow to make it better. * What is your evaluation of the documentation? Clear and understandable. * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? I believe the library is very useful, I will use it in my work. It helps to avoid writing complex rollback code clean and in-place. Another nice feature comparing to using lambdas is the ability to place breakpoints inside the rollback code. Without ScopeExit you can only achieve this by using manually-written scope guard class from scratch * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? Yes, played with the examples from documentation, GCC 3.4, no problems noted. * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? Compiled, played with examples, looked into the implementation. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? I'm sure everyone is :) * Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? Yes. A couple of general comments after reading other reviews. 1. The fact that the library takes all arguments by reference looks unavoidable. If it allowed passing by value (i.e. making copies) - the copy constructors can throw, and this exception will be thrown after you made the change to your container/whatever you'd like to rollback, and before you setup the rollback action. So you can't guarantee that your rollback action will be executed. So, in case you need a copy - it's much safer to create this copy before making the change to your container/whatever. It will also express your intention more clearly. 2. Of course it would be great to have a full-featured scope guard library in Boost, but its absense is not an excuse to reject ScopeExit, otherwise we need to reject scoped_ptr/scoped_array etc, as they are forms of scope guard. In general, I believe we can't reject a library A just because Boost misses a library B. Thanks, Maxim

It applies to ScopeExit I see. It seems to be caused by the use of __LINE__, (see http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/17341/match=boost+edit+co ntinue). This makes sense as edit & continue would probably get a hard time with changing line numbers. But still it produces nonsense error messages. Proposal -------- * Quarterly release schedule, with the target release date the 15th of the first month of each quarter. * If a release is late, that does not slip the date of the next quarter's release. * If something isn't ready for the current release, it is simply held until the next release. The current release is not delayed. * Being ready means being ready by the cutoff date set by the release manager. That will be relative early in the release cycle. Rationale --------- Regular releases that occur on a predictable schedule have many benefits: * Developers know far in advance when library updates must be ready, and that's both an aid to planning and a motivation to get stuff done. * Users know far in advance when library updates will be ready, and that helps their planning and reassures them of continuing support. * Regularity creates a sense of quality and trust in Boost for both developers and users. Quarterly releases seem about right: * It's often enough that the process will become smooth. * It's often enough that developers won't feel pressure to release immature updates. * It's often enough that users will feel bug fixes and new libraries are being released on a timely basis. * It isn't so often that users will view Boost as unstable, particularly given the predictable schedule. * It isn't so often that developers and release managers will become fatigued. * A quarterly (or similar) schedule has been very successful for both open source and commercial projects. Comments? The rationale depends a lot on my personal experiences, but I don't see that as a bad thing. --Beman

Hi Ion, Given that iterator_to turns a reference into an iterator, shouldn't this be to_iterator? Also with the clear/erase_and_dispose functions could there be a default disposer that calls delete? Thanks! -- Cory Nelson

[Uploaded to the vault (flags_v1.zip) – complete with docs and test file (no jam file yet – sorry) - tested in vc8 and MinGW GCC 3.4.2.] I’ve proposed this before and gotten a little interest – so I figured I’d try again (particularly now that 1.34.1 is out) and see if I could get some more interest! At its most simple, it’s a way to stop function users providing difficult to detect erroneous data. The best way to work out what this lib does is probably read the docs I uploaded, but for here I’ll take one of the examples I use from the docs: using boost::flags enum foo { foo_1 = 1<<0, foo_2 = 1<<1, }; enum bar { bar_1 = 1<<2, bar_2 = 1<<3, }; void func1(unsigned int options) { //do stuff } void func2(flags<foo> options) { //do stuff } int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { func1(foo_1 | foo_2 | bar_1 | bar_2); //Compiles fine func2(flags<foo>(foo_1) | foo_2 | bar_1 | bar_2); //Compile time error - cannot convert bar to foo } Additionally, sometimes it is useful to force the user to supply a flag rather than allow them to supply none (i.e. '0') - the flags_no_default provides this functionality. The library is not very big and it’s not very clever :) but the hope is to push errors back to compile time, at little or no runtime cost. If people are interested or not either way it’s cool – but since it’s now in the vault anyone can use it if they want. Hope it all makes sense! Questions/comments/criticism gratefully received. IAIN

Limitation of liability in Boost License

Hi all IANAL but AFAIK the Boost License's disclaimer of warranty and liability is invalid under German law (irrespective whether the licensee is a consumer or not). I'd guess that similar can be said about some other jurisdictions in Europe or elsewhere. I'm curious, is this a matter of concern for anyone, in particular for corporate contributors?
