Also I disagree here as well. BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT is one of a few macros that you could argue that should be included as public interface of boost. I suspect that If we were study this issue in depth, there would be very few examples of "public" macros that would be superior to their alternatives. "Non-public" internal macros, shur, the library author should be allowed to explore the creative use of macros all they want.

I would like to hear peoples thought on a library i uploaded to the vault and maybe get it submitted for review. the libraries name is the EventHandler library, it can be found in the vault under home / Generic Programming / EventHandler.zip i find it simple to use (well i wrote it so i should) but effective at adding almost .net style events to classes

Hello. This won't be a proper review of the library, but more a point of view of an average Boost user. ScopeExit seems like a very nice utility, but, I don't think I could ever use it because of two things: 1. Dependence on boost.typeof. I would like the native typeof keyword, but, boost.typeof too much stresses compile type and a requirement of type registration is so unergonomic that makes boost.typeof a very nice and powerful demo, but not a useful utility for every day use. 2. Unusual syntax, both for me and someone who would later work on my code. Using preprocessor sequence and having BOOST_SCOPE_EXIT_END after {} braces looks so unnatural in C++. If, by any chance, my vote will be counted, I'll vote no for this utility until those two items are resolved. I understand maybe it's not possible to do so, but, I would rather not have it in Boost then.

How to claim copyright (and potentially claim prior art?)

Bristow 2007. but I then realised that this would imply that it was written in 2007, so if this date was to be used to squash some of the absurd software patent claims - for example see http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6183437.html and many other comments on this, an issue that has re-surfaced again recently. I see an important side effect of software leaders like Boost is to preempt any attempt by companies to claim (or even threaten to claim) bogus patent rights by providing clear evidence of prior art. Do Boosters have any views on how we could or should be able to show date of writing? Is there going to be an archive of old releases by which we could establish a writing date? Or better is there going to be an archive of stuff *before* it gets reviewed and released (often at least a year earlier in the past and I doubt if it will get much less than a year even if we smarten up our act). Some of these claims go back a long time - a decade or so. Does the copyright claim date have any relevance to this? Should I write // Copyright Paul A. All seemed adequate for a small macro. Initially, my thought was, here we go again, another macro utility. I didnt like the "FOR_EACH" macro that got accepted into boost late last year either. In my mind, this "ScopeExit" macro would have to be extrodinarly useful for me to use it in my code. I don't mind that library authors use macros internally, but for "public" code, and a full blown boost library, I'm not convinced. * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? I wont be using it. However, thats just me, I dont like macros. * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? No. Just read the documentation. * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? Less than 1 hour. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Yes. And finally, every review should answer this question: * Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? Be sure to say this explicitly so that your other comments don't obscure your overall opinion. No. I fear that this macro, along with the "FOR_EACH" macro, that boost developers are warming up to "macros" in general. We should stick to standard syntax, even if the standard syntax is verbose and ugly. Macros always come back to bite you. My no vote is sole based on my dislike of macros. Macros internal to a library are fine, but for a public interface, I'm not persuaded.
