We've discussed using extended_type_info in place of standard RTTI, and I've built in a facility where the programmer can provide his own version of type info (for instance, you could give each constructor type a unique integer ID). [Boost.Signals] bug

Boost: 1.34.0 Compiler: MSVC 8.0 (without SP1). Here is, minimal example. struct Conn : public boost::signals::trackable { void operator()(){} }; void f() { boost::signal<void ()> sig; Conn c; sig.connect( c ); c = Conn(); // crash inside.. } The reason is simple. During clear() method of std::list, there are signals::connection destructor calls are happening, which, in turn, calling erase method of the same std::list, and as a result we're getting _DEBUG_ERROR("list erase iterator outside range"); I guess, the bug is with "dying" variable: in destructor, it was set to true, and then signals::connection destructors are not trying to remove themself from the std::list. But in boost::signals::trackable::operator=() there is no dying flag marking. Evgeny.

Hello, Any interests in a boost asynchronous concurrency library based on Cw and Join Calculus? Boost.Join follows Cw's design and supports lock-free concurrent design with a few abstractions: 1. asynchronous methods: async<void (T1, T2, ...)> A asynchronous method is one-way, no-result, non-blocking call; essentially passing a message. A asynchronous call is guaranteed to return immediately; internally there could be a queue to buffer the arguments or message. 2. synchronous methods: synch<R (T1, T2, ...)> A synchronous call will block till result is returned. However a synchronous call is different from normal method call in that it involves multithreads and synchronization. 3. chords or "joined" method body definition: for a normal function/method, there is 1-1 exact correspondence between a function header/signature and its body. In Cw and Boost.Join, a body can be associated with a set of (synchronous and/or asynchronous) methods. Such a definition is called "chord". A particular async/synch method may appear in the header of several chords. The body of a chord can only execute when all the methods in its header have been called. In Boost.Join, a thread safe buffer can be defined as following: class buffer: public actor<> { public: async<void(string)> put; synch<string(void)> get; buffer() { chord(put, get, &buffer::chord_body); } void chord_body(async_o<void(string)> put, synch_o<string(void)> get) { get.reply(put.arg1); //or equally, get.reply(put); } }; such a buffer can be safely used in multithreaded applications: buffer b; b.put("Hello"); b.put("World"); cout << b.get() << b.get() << endl; More detailed info can be found at http://channel.sourceforge.net Over a dozen samples are provided, mostly using Boost.Join to implement common concurrency idioms such as semaphores, futures and active objects. Lightweight Mutex and others

I'm looking at some code in boost/detail - in particular Lightweight mutex. Is there any chance that this as well as other useful modules can get promoted to boost "first class" status. That is would include thier own documentation(especially) and tests. I think several of the modules should have a more permanent "home". Just from the names it seems that the following should be considered for promotion as thier utility goes beyond that of an impementation detail for any specific library. lightweight_mutex interlocked atomic_count binary_search ut8_codecvt_facet and it seems others should be part of particular libraries rather than boost/detail/ sp_* shared_? shared_ptr type_info, void cast

I'd like to request the following functions added to shared_ptr's interface: template <class T> void * shared_ptr<T>::void_cast() const; template <class T> std::type_info const & shared_ptr<T>::type() const; The first function mimics the use of dynamic_cast<void *>(p) for pointers to polymorphic objects. The second function is similar to typeid(r), for references to polymorphic objects. Of course, void_cast needs to be specialized to apply the correct modifiers of T to the returned pointer type. There are two scenarios that need those functions: - when using shared_ptr<T> in contexts where T is incomplete (or void); - when the T in shared_ptr<T> has nothing to do with the type of the object managed by the shared_ptr's control block. For example, through the recently introduced aliasing constructor, it is possible for a shared_ptr<int> to manage the lifetime of an object of some user-defined type that has the int as a member. Both functions are critical for implementing proper serialization of shared_ptr objects. Emil Dotchevski

Hello, I've had much use of a small traits class for identifying types that matches the STL Container concept (roughly) . Two functions is made available, is_container<T> and container_category_of<T>. is_container simply evaluates to true_type or false_type, container_category_of tries to categorize T with the following tags. struct non_container_tag {}; struct container_tag {}; struct sequence_container_tag : public container_tag {}; struct associative_container_tag : public container_tag {}; struct hashed_container_tag : public associative_container_tag {}; template<class T, class Tag = container_tag> struct is_container It seems to work for STL containers, boost multi index, boost array etc.. haven't tried with ptr_containers yet but they should work, since the implementation just looks for a couple of member types using BOOST_MPL_HAS_XXX_TRAIT_DEF. Writing stream operators for a container can be implemented like template<class CharType, class CharTrait, class Container> inline typename boost::enable_if<is_container<Container>, basic_ostream<CharType, CharTrait>&>::type operator <<(basic_ostream<CharType, CharTrait>& os, const Container& c) { if (!os.good() ) return os; detail::write_container(os, c, d); return os; } Writing a generic insert() could look something like namespace detail { template<class Container, class T> bool insert(Container& c, const T& t, sequence_container_tag) { c.push_back(t); return true; } template<class Container, class T> bool insert(Container& c, const T& t, associative_container_tag) { return c.insert(t).second; } } template<class Container, class T> bool insert(Container& c, const T& t) { return detail::insert(c, t, container_category_of<Container>::type()); } Could this be of any use in boost? / Christian

Compiling the python example

First I posted basically this message to boost-user list on Monday 5/21 and have yet to receive any replies. If re-posting this message to a different list is inappropriate please forgive me. I do have some additional information. I installed boost 1.34.0 on a Window XP machine using mcvs 8.0 and was again able to successfully build all the boost libraries and received the same errors as on my Mac when I tried to build the boost python example. I was able to discover a rule called python-extension in the file boost_1_34_0/tools/build/v2/python.jam rule python-extension ( name : sources * : requirements * : default- build * : usage-requirements * ) { .... } IMPORT python : python-extension : : python-extension ; I am on a Mac with OS X 10.4 and trying to compile the boost/Python examples in tutorial or quickstart using Bjam v3.1.14 OS=MACOSX.
