I was looking at the function_traits implementation in the Boost CVS, and saw that it might benefit from adding a tuple-like interface to the function_traits type. I'm thinking along the lines of: typedef function_traits<void(int,char,bool)> sample_trait; at_c<sample_trait::args, 1>::type a; // char at_c<sample_trait::args, 3>::type b; // error, out of bounds ? typedef function_traits<void( tuple<int, char, bool> , std::string )> another_sample; at< typename at_c<another_sample::args, 0>::type, 0 >::type c; // int Perhaps adding a mpl::vector or a fusion::vector element 'args' can greatly improve the kinds of things that can be done with the function_traits<>, especially in libraries aiming to become more flexible when it comes to argument pack handling. I got the idea because I found myself needing a generic way of defining a tuple from the argument list of a signatures passed to function_traits<>. That's a pretty simple use case, but I found myself having to do some repetitive overloads to accommodate the 10 variations of function_traits using just the function_traits<>::arity element, and then having to do PP magic to iterate through the `argN_type' typedefs. With the additional `args' fusion/mpl vector in function_traits<>, it wouldn't have to be a concern since it already packs the types of the arguments. Defining operations over args could very well be a simple exercise in template metaprogramming. If anybody's interested, it's a pretty trivial patch attached. -- Dean Michael C. Producing graphs for documentation

In producing documentation for John Maddock's Math Toolkit, we have used a C++ program to output csv files, with titles in row 1, and data points below, usually several columns, to produce . We then imported this into RJS Graph (version 3.90.10), did a lot of fiddling each time to set the axes, labels, colours, point sizes etc, and finally exported a .ps file. Finally (phew!) we opened with Adobe Photoshop, changed size and saved as .png files (sample attached). These were then referenced from Boost Quickbook to make them appear in the html and pdf. There has got to be a better way!!! Do Boosters have any suggestions/experience on how to automate this process, ideally so that a C++ program directly outputs a .png file. Parallel/MPI: Renaming the library directories?

Back when we started writing the Message Passing library, we decided to put it into the "parallel" subdirectory (then the "mpi" sub-sub- directory), because we were hoping that "parallel" could become a top- level categorization for various parallel-programming libraries... threads, mpi, shared memory, etc. That may happen some day (when we manage to break Boost into pieces), but for now it's just a pain. Users need to using the longish namespace "boost::parallel::mpi", file names "boost/parallel/mpi", and run bjam with "bjam --with- parallel" (rather than "--with-mpi"). So, unless I hear screams, I'm going to move libs/parallel into libs/ mpi, boost/parallel into boost/mpi, and simplify its underlying directory structure a bit. When the time comes to split up Boost, and if it involves deeper namespaces, we'll make the change again then. For now, simpler is better. Cheers, Doug
