[bind/lambda] a functor holding a shared_ptr

In the following code: struct A { void func(); } int main() { shared_ptr<A> a(new A); boost::bind(&A::func, a); } the bind() call returns a function object which holds the shared_ptr by value (it's one of the shared owners). This is an important feature I'm using, because sometimes the functor is the last owner left standing, and I want to keep A alive until the functor's destructor (actually, I don't really like this design, but I'm talking about legacy code here). Replacing boost::bind with lambda::bind doesn't compile. Is this feature not supported by lambda::bind? If not supported now, is it planned to be supported in the future? Can I in the mean time implement this feature in my code with relative ease? Thanks, Yuval

I started to study why and found there is no support for this in boost. As result, me and my friend wrote "get_pointer" version which accepts weak_ptr. At actual call moment, implementation uses weak_ptr::lock() to get shared_ptr. If retrieved shared_ptr is invalid, then exception of type "disposed_exception" thrown. This code was tested on Windows XP SP2 with following compilers: VC6, VC7, VC7.1, VC8, g++ 3.2.3 (MinGW), g++ 3.4.4 (Cygwin). [sp_counted_base] Why does sp_counted_base.hpp not use atomic_count for gcc environments?

On sparc/gcc environment, boost/detail/sp_counted_base.hpp will use sp_counted_base_pt.hpp, which of course implements counter protection via pthread_mutex operations. Other gcc-environments (x86, x64, ia64, ppc) have the concept of using asm directives for atomic increment & decrement, which obviously is more efficient than the mutex operations. The boost/detail/atomic_count_gcc.hpp implementation seems like a more efficient mechanism for incrementing/decrementing the shared_ptr reference counters. In fact, the shared_ptr_nmt.hpp implementation does use boost::detail::atomic_count for the reference count (albeit directly, rather than through the shared_count template). I am using atomic_count as the basis for my internal reference counting for my intrusive_ptr-based objects and am happy with this. So I'm curious as to why sp_counted_base.hpp does not use the atomic increment/decrement model for sparc/gcc that it does for other gcc environments?

changes to serialization (split_free)?

I just updated to latest cvs head, and my serialization split_free broke. It used to be that namespace boost { namespace serialization { template<class Archive, class U> inline void serialize (Archive &ar, ublas::vector<U>& v, const unsigned int file_version) { boost::serialization::split_free (ar, v, file_version); } } } Would work when 'save' and 'load' were free functions in ::namespace, but now I'm getting 'no matching function' for 'save' and 'load'. Moving 'save' and 'load' into boost::serialization namespace fixed it. Is this expected/desired? This is gcc-4.1.1 (fedora fc6)

[build] 'make clean' incorrect

The clean target in the makefile that configure creates does a 'rm -rf bin.v1'. Jam puts things in bin.v2 so shouldn't that be 'rm -rf bin.v2' instead? Thanks, -glenn

[date_time] bug with time_duration serialization moving from 1.32.0 to 1.33.1

Hi, we've been serializing data to binary archives since serialization was first released. As such we have collected a lot of data files. They are serialized using C++Builder 6 and boost-1.32.0. We're now looking to move to VS 2005 and as such, boost-1.33.1 seems a much easier solution than trying to get 1.32.0 to run. But I've had trouble de-serializing archives created with BCB6 and 1.32.0 with VS 2005 and 1.33.1. I've found the problem in time_duration serialization. Its serialization was changed between 1.32.0 and 1.33.1 but no version increment occured. As such, 1.33.1 can't read archives created with 1.32.0 because of this. A version could be added to 1.33.1 now to check for this, but I guess this would then break all archives currently written with 1.33.1. For us, we're trying to move to C# so I guess we will mostly be using boost for backwards compatibility for the foreseeable future so our solution is to add a #define to the 1.33.1 header that makes it behave like 1.32.0 did which enables us to load our files. But I'm not sure how you would solve this for other users or what to do before 1.34.0. This situation isn't ideal as can't think of a solution without breaking compatibility at some point. But as a last thought, please can people be careful when modifying serialization functions to keep backwards compatibility. This has taken quite a while to track down but that isn't nearly as scary as not being able to move forward to another version of boost without loosing the ability to load in all our customers data. I believe others have pointed out that the time zone database would be much more useful if for each time zone one could have multiple daylight saving rules, each with its own start and stop time of applicablity. It seems to me that the easiest way to do this would be to use the files generated from the zoneinfo files by zic. A time zone database would be specified by the path to a directory structure containing one or more files produced by zic. On many Unix-style systems these files already exist, and the tool (zic) exists to produce them for others.
