Does this patch for boost/scoped_array.hpp look useful? < T * release() // never throws < { < T * result = ptr; < ptr = 0; < return result; < } < It allows me to use boost::scoped_array almost like an auto_ptr: int* foo(size) { boost::scoped_array<int> result(new int[size]); // do something to result // if an exception is thrown result will be cleaned up return result.release(); } void bar() { boost::scoped_array<int> foo_result(foo(1000)); // code is still exception safe } I wouldn't need this if - we had std::auto_array (don't think it exists) - std::vector<int>(size) wouldn't do the default construction of all elements and I didn't care about having two pointers instead of just one (sometimes I actually do care) - boost::scoped_array::ptr was protected instead of private so that I could inherit and add release() Are there arguments for not adding release()? ./configure generates Makefile with spaces instead of tabs

The last few times I've checked out the latest from cvs and ran ./configure, the generated Makefile contains spaces instead of tabs for the commands to execute within the rules. This is because configure contains spaces rather than tabs in its file where it generates the Makefile. Gnu make complains about this. I didn't see anything in a quick search of the archives mentioning this, so just letting the list know incase this wasn't the intention. Brian

[iterator] multiple definitions with zip_iterator

Hi, I think I am getting a problem with multiple definitions of tuple_equal(tuples::null_type, tuples::null_type) when I compile zip_iterator.hpp into two separate libraries and link these into an executable. I am using msvc 8. I made the function static and that allowed me to link the executable. I am not sure if that is the correct solution. Chris

Each may have references to other team_member objects who can be queried. 3 - The project_leader must have a reference to each team_member. 4 - The project_leader has a reference to a repository, as does each team_member. The project_leader places the information in the repository, where the team members can retrieve it. Naturally, each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages, and the actual implementation chosen depends on the other particulars of the problem. My library provides a simple mechanism for implementing option 4. Option 4 certainly has some disadvantages in this situation, but it has one strong advantage: The team_members are not dependent on the project_leader - they are depending on the information in the repository. The situation could be changed so that a certain team_member, or a higher level manager placed the information in the repository, and the team_member class would not need to be modified, as long as the meeting information structure was the same. As I've designed it so far, the library has the following features: -Data in the repository is indexed by strings -Type-safe (type-safety across shared libraries may not work on all platforms, because of usage of RTTI. If I work to have this library reviewed for boost, this will need to be discussed) -Thread-safety can be built into a variable in the repository (using boost.threads, variables can make automatic use of mutexes and such) -Functions or functors can be used to verify that each data item in the repository stays in a consistent state (for instance, the repository can check that a number does not leave a certain range). -A function or list of functions can be called when a value is updated - this can be used to implement the Observer pattern. Note that this could be used to provide for distributed repositories. Also, I didn't mention that the other library for creating plug-ins depends on this library. Each class that is a plug-in or extension accepts as a constructor parameter a reference to the repository that it should pull shared data from. (basically it makes it possible to send arguments to the constructor without knowing exactly what the constructor will need - it just pulls needed values from the repository.) Jeremy Pack

For a library function: Some system errors are best handled by aways throwing an exception. For example, a constructor should always throw if there is no way to leave the object in a valid state when a system error is encountered. Some system errors are best handled by ignoring the error. For example, an error in a destructor. But for all the other cases, the recommended approach is to provide throwing and non-throwing versions of the function, and let the user choose which is best for a given use: whatever foo(); // always throws on error whatever foo( error_code & ec ); // never throws on error Although this works well, it has the unfortunate consequence of doubling the number of functions. That makes the interface harder to understand and is a pain to implement, document, and maintain. A refinement is for the <error_code.hpp> header to provide a dummy error_code that is interpreted as a request to thrown on errors: extern error_code throw_on_error; Then only a single signature is required: whatever foo( error_code & ec = throw_on_error ); On an error, the implementation of foo throws if ec != &throw_on_error, otherwise it sets ec to the appropriate error_code and returns without throwing. This approach gives the user the same choice, but halves the number of functions. I can't think of any downside. Comments? --Beman
