I think Thorsten's question is a sympotom of a larger issue.
Why does Quan use such convoluted terminology? Fixed quantity?
Abstract quantity? Coherent quantity? Named quantity? Concrete
quantity? Anonymous quantity? Static unit? United value? A
general-purpose library should use simple terms and a bare minimum
of names.
Just some constructive criticism.

Initial Comment:
Under step 2 on the following web page, most of the
links lead to "404 Not found" pages, thus preventing me
from getting Boost to work properly:
http://www.boost.org/more/getting_started.html
I need to get Boost on NetBSD v3.0 so that I can
compile PowerDNS ( http://www.powerdns.com/ ).
Since I also couldn't even find copies of the
aforementioned web pages on The Way Back Machine (
http://www.archive.org/ ), I'm hoping that someone can
restore them from a backup or has a way of regenerating
this information somehow.

Summary: VARNAMES bjam rule doesn't work for global module
Initial Comment:
VARNAMES bjam rule always returns empty list for the
global module.
This is due to the fact that builtin_varnames relies
upon module_t::variables struct member being not NULL
if there are variables in the module, which is wrong
for the "currently running module" (i.e.
frame->module->variables is _always_ NULL). This is due
to the way enter_module() and var_hash_swap() work.
Since builtin_varnames() always runs in the global
module context, global module's 'variables' member is
always NULL when builtin_varnames() is called.
The proposed patch fixes this bug.

Hello everybody,
At the moment, some objects in the preliminary Boost.Process library
are only constructed internally by the library. Examples of these
include 'status' instances, created by calls to 'child::wait', and
instances of 'child', created by 'launcher::start'. This is currently
done by declaring friendship among the related classes (well, not
exactly, but almost).
I believe this is suboptimal because it prevents extensibility.
Consider a user that wants to create his own Launcher implementation.
His code is required to return a new 'child' object. But, oh! He
cannot currently create it because the constructor is private and his
launcher class is not a friend of the provided 'child'. Of course, he
could implement his own 'child' -- and in turn implement his own
'status'. Ouch.
In order to solve this, I was now adding some free functions that call
the appropriate constructors. This way, the class' constructor is
kept private to avoid "accidental" creations from user code, but the
user still has the ability to create such objects when he really wants
to. For example:

The first thing I'm wondering is if this design approach makes sense
or I should simply make the constructor public. No matter the answer,
the following still applies.
But then, there is a worse problem (which made me write this mail in
the first place). Consider the child's constructor:

So far so good: the create_child function can now be used by the
user... except that... he now has to deal with the file_handle class
which was kept completely private until now. So a couple of questions
arise:
1) Should the user be allowed to construct these classes (for the reasons
explained above)?
2) If 1 is "yes", then file_handle (and any other class that appears in other
create_* functions) needs to be made public. This exposes some classes
that are not really about "process management" to the user, but maybe
that is not a problem? Eventually these classes may end up being part
of some other library that deals with low-level OS stuff (Boost.System?).
I'm open to other suggestions.

I just realized, that unless BOOST_STRICT_CONFIG macro is defined
(which we don't), config/compiler/hp_acc.hpp defines BOOST_NO_SWPRINTF
macro. So, even if hpux.hpp would not define this macro, hp_acc.hpp
will.
I think, that for now, we should leave part of the hpux.hpp header
setting BOOST_NO_SWPRINTF and BOOST_NO_CWCTYPE macros alone because,
almost certainly, tuning configuration macros for HP-UX/aCC will
require a coordinated update of both hpux.hpp and hp_acc.hpp.
I think, that for now, we should change hpux.hpp to only define THREADS
macros for aCC (which is necessary for regex_regress_threaded and
static_mutex_test regex library tests to pass):

Hi,
The 1.34.0 branch creation was a long while ago and as has been remarked
earlier progress on getting it release ready has been slow to
non-existent depending on the particular point of view. This is not to
say that there wasn't a significant amount of work done but if we ever
want to release it we either have to scale back the requirements or try
harder.
The next step is putting out a beta. Here is what I think needs to be
done before we can call it beta.
- Fix regressions with respect to the prior release. The regression
tests still show a fair amount of "broken" fields.
- Update the "Getting Started" and build system documentation to reflect
the change to build.v2.
- Make v2 the default build system (is this already so?).
- Fix *all* of the filename too long issues.
- Fix as much of the inspection issues as possible.
All in all the inspection report shows a frightening number of issues.
What is our stance with respect to license/copyright missing?
At this point I think it is unrealistic to set a date for the beta as
far as I can see. I will set a date as soon as we made some significant
progress. If I can somehow stick your name to the outstanding issues
expect to be bugged from now on. I guess a volunteer for the
documentation issues would be very much appreciated.
If anyone feels like not being able to make progress due to some
dependency please shoot me an email.

A while ago I had a problem with the MST algorithm in boost. Essentially
profiling reviled that the MST algorithm was a bottleneck for the
computation I was performing. Thus I had to investigate the performance
bottlenecks in boost mst and with this mail I want to investigate the
potential for improving current boost implementation.
What is the proposed way of getting the prim algorithm updated in boost?
First let me argue that there is room for improvement. I have made a
test program that constructs 1000 random complete graphs with 1000 nodes
and the execution time is as follows
actually implementing jarniks algorithm
prim_minimum_spanning_tree 47.585s
current prim (djikstra wrapper) 3m2638s (338% slower)
kruskal_minimum_spanning_tree 40m57s (5063% slower)
The 47.585s performance is achieved by just implementing Jarnik/Prims
algorithm using the relaxed_heap (that is already in boost, but code is
available if necessary). As a side effect it seems to be a good test for
the relaxed_heap, given that it revealed problems with the Fibonacci
heap[1].

I also want to take the opportunity to ask about the meaning of the
minimum spanning tree algorithm as such, since efficient implementations
in the future could be helped a lot by knowing exactly what the problem
that should be solved is.
Given the hardness to understand the actual generality of the MST
problem the current implementation tries to solve, I find it difficult
to see how efficient algorithms can be heuristically selected. I.e. can
you use num_edges(g) as an indicator of sparseness?
