Or you could right your own init code. The scaffolding code is a pain to write over and over 2. It is not thread safe 3. You may not want to pay the runtime initialization cost if the map is huge . Iterator facade < operation?

I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer. I've recently started using the iterator_facade class, and it's very useful, but it seems inefficient in some respects. Specifically, the < operator. According to the website docs, this uses the distance_to() function defined by the derived class. That works fine for some iterators, but not others. Often, it's possible to have much more efficient operations than that. Take for example, some data structure of sorted strings. It is not necessary to know how many elements are between two strings to know whether one is before the other. Like 'use empty() rather than size() == 0' in Meyer's _Effective STL_, it would seem that a more efficient solution can be created in many cases. So, is there a way to do this, to override iterator_facade's system, or am I missing something? I have read most of the documentation, but that doesn't mean there isn't something I overlooked. [system][timer] CPU timer first draft

After years of procrastination, I've finally put together the CPU timer I've always wanted. It provides wall-clock time, user CPU time, and system CPU time. A time reporter class handles the details of display. Typical output would be: wall 0.50 s, user 0.03 s, system 0.05 s, total cpu 0.08 s, 15.6% The percentage is CPU utilization relative to wall clock. Note that I see a CPU timer as complementary rather than competitive to the high-precision timer component others are working on. I'm all for their effort to continue. My plan is to submit the CPU timer stuff as part of a Boost.System library, which packages small operating system dependent components together for convenience. There is an early version of Boost.System stuff in the vault. Go to the System directory at http://boost-consulting.com/vault/ to download system-0.1.zip. The preliminary CPU timer docs can be viewed online at http://mysite.verizon.net/beman/cpu_timer.html. Note that I did use Boost.Date_Time components. That was because I'm not very familiar with Boost.Date_Time, and wanted to initially concentrate on getting the desired results. Interest in a checked array iterator?

Hi all, In a similar style to the 'small array count' utility that is being discussed on another thread, would people be interested in an array iterator that is bounds checked in debug builds? Similar to the STLPort debug iterators. In release builds the iterator is pointer type, and incurs no overhead. Its advantage over using boost::array is that that you don't need to specify the size of the array. It also makes using arrays with STL easier by providing begin() and end(), which I find can be error prone and unwieldy for arrays. So rather than : std::sort(&array[0], &array[size(array)]); we have : std::sort(begin(array), end(array)); Usage is shown below. Hallo, is anybody working on Borland specific issues or should all the corresponding failures be marked up as expected? On a related note: were Borland settings changed between BBv1 and BBv2? Boost CVS not playing well with MSVC 8.0

Hi Everyone, I've recently just got the courage to get the CVS source from sourceforge, and I had encountered numerous problems with building/installing it, and then actually using it -- in Windows after having working with boost for quite a while now in Linux. As the post suggests, I'm using MS Visual C++ 8.0 (the free one, which comes with the Express edition of the IDE) and here are two of the problems encountered while building: 1) Python is already installed in the system (C:\Python24) but the build system still complains about it -- tried defining PYTHON_ROOT to no avail and "--with-python-root=[]" but the flag is not recognized (and turns up an error using Boost.Jam v 2). 2) Tools not explicitly defined in documentation: I had to wade through errors and complaints from Boost.Jam to find out that I needed bison,flex,m4 among other stuff. I haven't seen any documentation requiring these tools, and it would be very much appreciated if they were conveniently expressed in documentation. (more a request/observation than anything) 3) Defaults for msvc 8.0 like directory paths, etc. had to be manually defined. Though this may be addressed with Boost.Build, I still don't have enough experience with it to actually propose a fix/workaround. The Platform SDK environment vars also had to be set, which which distributed apart from the MSVC 8.0 Express toolchain -- which might become a requirement in the future, but am too much of an MS noob to start figuring this out for now. When building, there are a lot of deprecated complaints, and even template warnings. This might have something to do with the changes from 7.1 to 8.0, though they are mostly warnings than anything else. I had encountered installation and usage issues that might be specific to MSVC 8.0, and I've summarized them below: - libs build alright, and are copied to the specified location. However, when a project built using the unit_testing_framework for example is about to link to the .lib, MSVC 8.0 looks for a file named "libboost_unit_test_framework-vc80-mt-gd-1_35.lib" but only "boost_unit_test_framework-vc-gd-1_35.lib" is available. - headers don't get copied fully when installed: I had to manually copy over a lot of the preprocessor library and the mpl library into the install directory. Any tips and pointers (and other information that you think might be helpful) will be most appreciated. I still have to figure out Boost.Jam to be able to contribute to the installation and usage problems outlined above, although I hope the above report helps. NOTE: I only uncommented "using msvc ; " in user-config.jam -- please let me know if there are other things that might be helpful to make sense of the stuff posted above.
