That said, I feel like I could start processing images in about half an hour and I don't know anything about image transformations! The presentation keeps comparing GIL to the STL and this is true. Knowing how STL works helped me understand the GIL concepts. I would really like to see this library in the next version of the standard, but I believe it is too late for C++0x. It might not be too late for TR2, and by getting GIL reviewed and in Boost (and considering it is part of the Adobe open source), having a reference implementation isn't a problem. Going on the standard alone, C++ is seen as a console/text based programming language, and this is the way that it is usually studied. Java is considered to be easier than C++ and has a standard graphical framework, allowing students to learn hte language from a graphical perspective. [serialization] crashes on latest cvs_head

My applications started crashing in the serialization lib when I recently updated from boost cvs_head. I tried and failed to make a small reproducible test case. If anyone would like some more details I can post them here. Regards, John.

[serialization] Specification of different class version on transmit

Has there been consideration to supporting setting the class version on output? This is useful when transmitting classes over a network without requiring both sides to be at the same software version. While the current version support allows the newer side to interpret an older message format, there is no way for the newer side to use the older serialization. This requires an immediate transition of all communicating parties to a common version, which is unreasonable in a heterogeneous network. Implementation probably has a number of issues, as there could be multiple connections, each with its own ideas of supported versions for each class. How the two sides agree on a class version is outside the scope of serialization, although a companion framework may be suitable. But support for specification of version information for use by transmit serialization is required to be able to write such a companion class. There may also need to be some support in the archive templates to associate a particular class with a particular output version.

[Pool] Type signature of UserAllocator::free

Hello, I already posted this message a week a ago, but there were some problems with the mailing list and I got no replies, so I give it another try: I was looking for a lightweight Allocator interface and found many references to the UserAllocator interface from Pool http://www.boost.org/libs/pool/doc/interfaces/user_allocator.html I'm not sure if the interface was designed to be used outside of Pool in the first place, but if one tries to do so, the signature of the free function becomes a problem. The free function currently takes a char* const argument, which makes it difficult to use as a deleter for shared_ptrs and requires a typecast everytime one wants to free memory. What is the design rationale for not using a void* (non-const) argument? Could the specification be changed? Regards, Stephan

I was just made aware that my initial post was burried in a thread, and indeed my intention was to create a new thread with this proposal. Below is my original post from few hours ago. I apologize for this repost. --------------- Hello, I guess I'm not quite ready to request a formal review for the Exception lib I wrote, but because of the initial interest in it I do want to propose adding it to Boost. So I wrote documentation, and adapted the source code to Boost. Please check it out: http://www.revergestudios.com/exception/exception.htm If you click Download on that page, you can get a .zip file with the source code, tests, and an example, complete with Boost Build Jamfiles. All of the Exception lib code is contained in boost/exception.hpp. The code has been tested with msvc 7.1, 8.0 and gcc 3.4.4. Peter Dimov mentioned the system_error proposal from Beman Dawes. Is there something like a is_specialization in Boost.Traits? Something like: template <typename TypeT, template<typename> class TemplateTypeT> struct is_specialization { private: template <typename T> static char foo( TemplateTypeT<T>* ); static int foo( ... ); public: enum { value = (sizeof(is_specialization::foo((TypeT*)0)) == sizeof(char)) } ; }; It's very limited since it only supports a specific number of template arguments. The number of template arguments could be passed, but it would still cause problems with non-type template arguments. Any ideas? Maybe something like: BOOST_IS_SPECIALIZATION(type, templateType, signature) called like: BOOST_IS_SPECIALIZATION(myType, std::list, (typename, typename)) Regards, Nicolas

Type traits reference page

Hello, I have a rather silly question but the following page : http://boost.org/doc/html/boost_typetraits/reference.html About 4 times out of 5 It takes AGES to load in my browser (Firefox). I've tried on several machines at different places and it was always the same, so I think it might come from the server. I don't really have a clue about why it does that, I tried to see the page size but it wouldn't even display the size on the "page information" once loaded. I took it with wget and the page seems to be ~260K which should not be a problem. Basically my question is just if someone experienced the same problem ? If someone has a clue about why this is happening ? Thank you in advance. Philippe
