[asio][thread] a new model for boost::asio (coroutine)

I have used the recent boost::asio library in my small project, I found it very difficult to correctly write the asynchronous code. So I tried another approach ---- a Half-Sync/Half-Async, I found it much better. The basic idea is very simple, utilize the coroutines(also called light weight threads, or user level threads) to handle multiple connections simultaneously and collaboratively. This approach has the advantange of simplicity in the Synchronous IO model, as well as the high performance in the Asynchronous IO model. Unfortunately, there isn't any coroutine support in boost::thread, and I had to make my experiment with the fiber support in ms windows. So I suggest coroutine be support. The benefit isn't only confined to boost::asio, in fact, it's an important way to describe algorithm flow, and many dynamic languages, both old and new, are supporting this feature. -------------- lihuiba 2006-07-05

[boost.python] tons of memory leak on VC 8.0

Hi, I've been assessing and learning boost.python (1.33.1). But when I add memory leak detection to a small test program (cf. attachment), I found tons of memory leaks (about 20 leaks). I ask that for each release, my developers improve one existing library (both documentation and code) - we release once a month so this helps to keep things from stagnating. Right now I don't mandate _which_ library is improved but at some point I'll have to start dictating the priority. Of course, the folks working for me aren't quite volunteers so I can get away with that. But some possible suggestions for boost - 1. Speed up the release cycle - I would try to get two two releases a year at a minimum. Just upping the release pace will help avoid stagnation. 2. Make maintenance part of the cost of admission - "We're really happy to take your GIL submission, but part of contributing to Boost is to assist with the general maintenance. Here's a short list of tasks we'd like you to take on..." (Sorry Lubomir!) I'm constantly looking at ways that we can improve this with ASL - honestly the library as it stands today is large enough that I could burn my entire team just maintaining and improving the current libraries without ever adding any more (at least for the next few years). [Review Request] Message Passing Interface (MPI) Library

I am requesting a formal review for a Boost library that provides modern C++ bindings for the Message Passing Interface (MPI). The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a standard interface for message passing in high-performance parallel applications. It defines a library interface, available from C, Fortran, and C++, for which there are many MPI implementations. Although there exist C++ bindings for MPI, they offer little functionality over the C bindings. The Boost.MPI library provides an alternative C++ interface to MPI that better supports modern C++ development styles, including complete support for user-defined data types and C++ Standard Library types and using arbitrary function objects for collective algorithms. Boost.MPI is built for efficiency, avoiding unnecessary overhead and translating high-level operations into the most specialized MPI call possible. Boost.MPI currently covers the majority of the MPI 1.1specification, including blocking and non-blocking point-to-point communication, collective operations, communicators, MPI datatypes, and environment management. For a good cryptographic random number generator it assumes that you have some high entropy source of data from which you can harvest bits (a clock will only give you a couple bits of entropy at best). The problem is a bit simpler for a UUID - as you only need a unique value as a node ID to base the UUID off of - the node ID could come from a cryptographic quality random number generator (if you have one) - the usual source for the node ID is the machine MAC ID but that leads to privacy issues. Using MD5 and a pool of unique and high entropy values one can distill a reasonably unique node ID. Once you have the node ID - it is useful to be able to generate additional IDs quickly (for example, if you want most objects in your application to have a persistent and globally unique ID - this is a good thing). UUIDs provide for that as well - typically generating a new truly random number will take significant time (assuming you have an an entropy source). If you know of a good library for cryptographic quality random numbers I'm interested - that's the core issue right now for the ZUID library is ensuring enough entropy for the node ID. Sean
