Hello, a boost-shmem library would by very useful. I could not figure out how a process sharing multiple message-queues with several other processes gets informed from which message-queue can be read without blocking? Would this be possible (some demultiplexing mechanism)? Regards, Oliver

[Review] Shmem on QNX6

Please always state in your review, whether you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library! Yes - How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? A glance at the docs and a couple of attempts at the tests. - Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? The QNX OS offers many techniques for IPC - shared memory is just one of those. I use it a lot, but normally for POD (Plain Old Data) and simple non-virtual classes. I have learned the hard way over the years about its limitations e.g. no pointers, no virtual classes etc. I look forward to being able to evaluate this library in more depth as time permits. - Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? I attempted to build and test on QNX Neutrino v6.3.0 (aka QNX6) using the gcc 3.3.5 compiler and Dinkumware C++ std library. There were some compile failures and test failures, but nothing that could not be fixed given time. The QNX supplied GNU C++ std library fails miserably because the wide character support is disabled. - What is your evaluation of the design? Generally good. QNX does not currently support memory mapped files although it does allow the creation of regular files (but not directories) under /dev/shmem. Memory mapped files are being implemented and are promised for a future release. - What is your evaluation of the documentation? Others have said it all. - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? The core classes for managing the memory space save a lot of C code and go way beyond the simple helper classes I have written. Synchronisation primitives are pretty much mandatory in shared memory applications and I welcome these. I look forward to evaluating the use of STL classes and being able to treat the shared memory dynamically. A number of the extensions that you propose in the form of message passing queues between processes already exist in the QNX kernel, but I can see the potential for less fortunate :-) operating systems. [mpl][test] Plans for supporting sunpro-5_8-sunos and dmc- 8_47?

Are there any plans for mpl and test support for these compilers in 1.34? I'm asking because many statechart failures on these compilers are actually mpl or test failures. If there are no plans I'll simply mark statechart unusable, no problem. If there are plans however, I'll probably need to reserve considerable time for investigating failures... Hi, as announced earlier the Boost CVS is in feature freeze mode (Release Stage 3) now. In case you really need to put more features in please talk to me *first*. Let's shoot for a branch for release in 4 weeks from now. Please focus on fixing regressions for the next 4 weeks. One more thing that needs to be done is updating the what's new in 1.34.0 section in boost/index.htm. [Serialization] Compilation error for private & protected derived classes

Hi, The following will not compile although if the inheritance is public there are no problems. The documentation implies that it should work. I cannot find a friend function declaration to put in Derived that will make MSVC8 happy. I am using boost 1_33_1. It also offers helper classes, such as offset pointers, process shared mutexes, condition variables, and named semaphores. Library users can apply all STL algorithms and utilities with created shared memory objects. Shmem also wants to present a portable implementation, unifying UNIX and Windows shared memory object creation, providing simple wrapper classes. Shmem offers the following to the user: - Portable synchronization primitives for shared memory, including shared mutexes and shared condition variables. - Dynamic allocation of portions of a shared memory segment. - Named allocation in shared memory. Shmem can create objects in shared memory and associate it with a c-string offering a similar mechanism to a named new/delete. Created object can be found by other processes using Shmem framework. - Offset pointers that can be safely placed in shared memory to point to another object of the same shared memory segment even if the memory is mapped to a different address. - STL compatible shared memory allocators so that STL containers can be placed in shared memory. Shmem also offers a pooled node allocator to save and optimize shared memory allocation in node containers. - STL compatible containers for systems with STL implementations that cannot deal with shared memory. The user can map shared memory to different addresses and use STL compatible containers and algorithms. Useful to store common data or implement shared memory databases. These containers also show how STL compatible containers can make use of shared memory STL compatible allocators to place such containers in the shared memory.
