Shouldn't the .mk files in the builds subdirectory either be fixed or
removed? Or at least a readme added explaining their status and directing
people to build.bat?

Just typing "build" (which is really easy to do; years of experience says
you don't need the .bat) unfortunately doesn't fail immediately. Instead a
demon appears to seize control of the command window and splatter it with
hyphens. Eventually it tries to start printing. I killed the command window
without bothering to see what the printing said.
Maybe rename build.com to vms_build.com to save future users from
Boost-Build list run by bdawes at acm.org, david.abrahams at rcn.com, gregod at cs.rpi.edu, cpdaniel at pacbell.net, john at johnmaddock.co.uk
