Thanks for the quick reply, most appreciated.
That's an interesting answer. I did find some gcc bug reports about rodata.
I've not looked at all of them but the gist from them leads me to think you
are correct.
Would you happen to know what versions of gcc/binutils get along in this? Our
current distro versions are gcc-3.4.6 and binutils-2.16.1.
