Starting Boost.Ruby: Questions / Comments

Hey all, So after many hours of research, attempts at wrapping up code with SWIG and what not, I've decided to attempt taking the ideas from Boost.Python and luabind and make a Ruby version. I know about the Langbinding project, but as there is very little there, details are scarce and I haven't received a response for a post I made there, I'm going to go my own way. When (if) Langbinding picks up again I'll definitely look at offering help to building a Ruby backend, but until then I might as well just build Boost.Ruby to learn what's needed. That said, is there anyone here who's started a similar project, or knows of one? I've done searching through this list, and through the general web and have found nothing. This will be my first time really using Boost and I look forward to both learning about and hopefully contributing to this excellent library. Also, if there is any recommended reading, or lessons learned that I should read (that isn't easily accessible through Boost documentation), I'd also appreciate that. Jason Roelofs

[1.35.0] branches/release open for known-good merges

Until further notice, branches/release is open for known-good merges. "known-good" means changes that are already passing trunk regression tests, or are in files like documentation that have no effect on testing. Thus if you make a bug fix in trunk, wait a day or two before committing a merge of the fix to branches/release and look at the regression test results before you commit. Serialization and dynamic "fallback" to base classes

Boost Serialization library provides a great solution for serializing derived classes by pointers to base classes, but I'm concerned with a simple use case: The program is being used on two computers "A" and "B" where "A" sends data to "B" by the means of serialization. At some upgrade of the program a serialized class "bus" is complemented with a derived class "big_bus". Only computer "A" gets the new version. I don't want the old version on "B" to dismiss a received "big_bus" object from "A", I need to convert it into a "bus" class object. It is sometimes much more useful to process the "big_bus" as a "bus" than not to process at all. I can assure serialization of each derivation starts with the serialization of the base class. I'm also ready to cope with the overhead of storing parent class information within the information about the derived classes. And it's ok if multiple inheritance is out of the question. Is there a pattern, a proposed solution to allow this dynamic "fallback" to base classes?

Is this fixed? or can it differ on some patform? I ask because CMake's FindBoost module is looking at the wrong include and lib places (wrong for the default structure), but maybe that's the correct one on some linux or so. TIA Fernando

CMake's FindBoost issues

Hi, I've noticed that CMake's FindBoost doesn't work for me.It searches for a folder "boost-XX_YY_ZZ" while the windows installer puts it in "boost_XX_YY_ZZ". Is the "boost-" vesion used in linux? or is this pattern just plain wrong. Also, it looks up for an env var named "BOOST_ROOT", but I happen to use "BOOSTROOT". Ben (and others): I was also thinking, spurred by Howard's combination web page, about the following variants for enumerating *equivalence* *classes* of permutations: * next/prev_cyclic_permutation: all cyclic permutations are considered equivalent. If any element is distinct, say *first, simply enumerate all the permutations of [++first,last) keeping *first fixed. Complications occur, however, if *first is repeated, or if cyclic permutations must be enumerated in lexicographical order and the minimum element is repeated. So the algorithm may have some value after all * next_prev_partial cyclic_permutation: same thing with permutations of r among n elements. I'm not sure how complicated the algorithm is... but it's certainly no longer a simple extension like the full cyclic permutation. For one thing, fixing every first element of the partial permutation to each element in turn will enumerate partial permutations twice. I think requiring the first element of the partial permutation to be the minimum of these, thus taking every iterator middle in the range [first, last-r) and enumerating the partial_permutations of [++middle, last) of size r-1 would enumerate them in lexicographic order, if all the elements are distinct. Not sure what happens with equal elements, perhaps just skipping over the middle such that *middle == *(middle-1) might do the trick. * next/prev_reverse_permutation: a permutation and its reversal are considered equivalent. The difficulty here seems not to enumerate them (you could skip a permutation if, e.g., the first is greater than the last element, or if the permutation is greater than its reversal if you also wish to take care of equal values). The difficulty seems to enumerate them in lexicographic order with at most (last - first) swaps and comparisons (the previously proposed algorithm has no upper bound on the number of operations needed to obtain the next_reverse_permutation). I think a tweaked implementation of next_permutation must be written, it doesn't seem possible to just combine the existing algorithms. For that reason, it would deserve to be a standalone algorithm. Minor point: the name is not a good one, must come up with a better one. * next/prev_partial_reverse_permutation: same with permutations of r among n elements. Both variants seem rather natural but a bit more far-fetched than the unadorned ones. I'd like to hear if you think they would deserve standardization or only clutter the existing proposal. Regardless of standardization, they might make a nice addition to the proposed combination library (http://photon.poly.edu/~hbr/boost/ combinations.html) so any comments/thoughts about implementation is also welcome. -- Herve Bronnimann hervebronnimann(a)mac.com
