Serialization and polymorphic archives

Hello all, I've been using the serialization library for a while now. Because of the run-time module loading aspect of our project, serialization has to be available through virtual functions and we do this by wrapping calls to boost serialization using poylmorphic archive types. In general, this has worked well. We'd like to start using the 1.35 branch because we want access to Boost.mpi as well. Rebuilding the code against 1.35 works fine and doesn't require any changes. However, as soon as we try running any code, we get the following missing symbol problem (this is happening when run-time loading a library that links against boost_serialization): undefined symbol: _ZN5boost7archive6detail27archive_pointer_iserializerINS0_27polymorphic_binary_iarchiveEEC2ERKNS_13serialization18extended_type_infoE Any ideas on what could be going on here? Boost.HTTP ?

Greetings, I've been working over the past 7+ months on a little library that uses Boost and ASIO to implement HTTP functionality. Originally I called this "libpion," then renamed it to the "Pion Network Library." I'm using it as piece of a larger open source project for complex event processing, which has taken on the overall "Pion" brand (hence the change). http://pion.atomiclabs.com/pion/net The library includes pretty comprehensive support for HTTP versions 1.0 and 1.1, including persistent connections, pipelining, chunked encodings, etc. It supports client-side operations as well as an extensive server-side implementation, and can use either blocking or asynchronous sockets (through use of the Boost.ASIO library). The original purpose was to create a Boost/C++ library for building lightweight HTTP interfaces for applications. Although it can certainly be used to serve files, It is not meant to replace or compete with any full-featured web server (like Apache or lighttpd). One of its main features/uses is to bind HTTP resources to code. The library is now fairly stable and feature-complete, and I have a few other developers helping out with it. I've been thinking more lately about preparing this to submit for formal review as a Boost library. However, there are a few obstacles that I know of: 1) This is my first Boost library, and I made the mistake of using CamelCase and other non-Boost styles starting it out. So, some re- naming and cleanup work would obviously be required. I don't imagine this would take too much time, though. 2) Some of the functionality overlaps with other libraries that have not yet been included or accepted into Boost (most notably, I think Boost.Extension would overlap with Pion's handling of web services: dynamic plug-ins bound to resources). I'd be happy (and actually prefer) to swap out this code with Boost.Extension, but I do not believe it has been reviewed or accepted yet either. I could also prepare a version with the plug-in functionality removed, but since it's being used in other projects, this would create a fork requiring extra maintenance energy, etc. 3) I know that Dean Michael Berris has formed a group of developers working on a more comprehensive network protocol library for Boost called cpp-netlib. HTTP is one of the protocols they are working on. I've offered and would still be quite happy to combine efforts somehow, but that project still seems to have a long way to go, and a few people have mentioned that it may be preferable to have an independent library focused on HTTP. So.. I decided to throw all this out there and see what people think. Should Boost have its own HTTP library, or should it be part of an more comprehensive network protocol library? Would it be better have something available sooner in Boost that works and is reliable, and try to resolve the overlap over time as cpp-netlib matures? Or, would it be better to wait and try to merge my library (or at least it's functionality) into cpp-netlib? Thanks, -Mike

Clean disconnect with asio socket library

Hello, i'm using boost 1.34 with the asio c++ library extension for socket communication. At the moment i have following problem. - i open a client class with usage of io service and a connection manager according to the examples TcpClient* client = new TcpClient(ioServiceClient, string(regServer->host), Utilities::intToString(regServer->port), connectionManager, *this); - after connected to a server i send some messages via asio::async_write(socket_, buffer, boost::bind(&TcpConnection::handle_write, shared_from_this(), asio::placeholders::error)); - the connection itself listen to incoming messages via asio::async_read(socket_, asio::buffer(inbound_header_), boost::bind(&TcpConnection::handle_read_header, shared_from_this(), asio::placeholders::error)); So what i have to do is - open connection - send some messages - disconnect The disconnect is done ioServiceClient.post(boost::bind(&ConnectionManager::stop_all, &connectionManager)); So what is my problem: I need to close the connection after sending the last message. At a certain message length the disconnect happens before the message was send completely. That's why i thought putting the disconnect via post to the io service will handle this. But this is not the case. How can i make a clean disconnect when all outstanding messages were send completely?? Thanks for your answers. GCCXML compile errors with boost header files

Gccxml does not seem to be able to handle the boost/mpl/and.hpp file. I have the most recent gccxml (retrieved the source tree and built it) and 1.34.1 boost. I was told by GCCXML support that boost/config/compiler/gcc_xml.hpp needs to exist in order for GCXXML to process boost header files and this file does exist. Please see the content of it below. Can somebody please tell me why it's not working for me? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Hi, In execution_monitor.ipp, these macros protect the inclusion of stdarg.h on the Sun. #if defined(__SUNPRO_CC) && defined(__SunOS) On our system: sass8000(217 ^H)% uname -a SunOS sass8000 5.10 Generic_118833-36 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire The macro __SUNPRO_CC is defined but __SunOS is not defined. Here's the set of macros defined by the sun-5.7 compiler: " -D__SunOS_5_10 -D__SUNPRO_CC=0x570 -Dunix -Dsun -Dsparc -D__sparc - D__sparcv8plus -D__unix -D__sun -D__BUILTIN_VA_ARG_INCR -D__SVR4 - D__SUNPRO_CC_COMPAT=5 -D__SUN_PREFETCH I'd like to change the test in execution_monitor.ipp to permit either macro to include the necessary headers, like this: #if defined(__SUNPRO_CC) || defined(__SunOS) The patch is attached, okay to commit this? -- Noel Belcourt

[test] symbol not defined: execution_exception

When I include header <boost/test/unit_test.hpp> in my program, the linker complains that symbol "execution_exception" is undefined. I looked at the compiler output and found that class "execution_exception" is a parameter on "virtual void exception_caught(execution_exception const&)" in file test_observer.hpp. It is declared but never defined. I added "#include <boost/test/execution_monitor.hpp>" to file test_observer.hpp and the linker error went away. Is this the correct way to fix the problem? Thanks, Dave Jenkins
