On the page <http://www.boost.org/more/getting_started.html>, there is a reference to the "Nightly Generated Documentation" page, located at <http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/libraries.h…> Last week (before I left on a trip), I made a change to the boost::threads docs, but it hasn't shown up :-( Now, there are two possibilities here: 1) I foobared the change. 2) The docs are not getting rebuilt. Anyone know if the docs are, in fact, getting rebuilt nightly? Also, how do I build the docs locally? Hi, I would like to resurrect the discussion about database support in Boost by posting here the following announcement: <announcement> I'm pleased to announce that the new release of the SOCI library is available for download. The homepage of the project is: http://soci.sourceforge.net/ The SOCI library is a database-access library that tries to mimic the syntax known from Embedded SQL, but staying within the standard C++. The target audience of the SOCI library are those developers, who need an efficient, but also straightforward and easy to use interface. This new release brings the following enhancements: 1. More extensive support for object-relational mapping. 2. A plug-in architecture for backends, which allows to target various database engines by simply linking with the chosen backend. Currently, the following database engines are supported (through their respective "native" interface): * Oracle * PostgreSQL </announcement> We have prepared a small rationale FAQ that can be of interest to you: <http://soci.sourceforge.net/doc/rationale.html>. We would like to put this library under consideration for inclusion into Boost, but before we will bother you with formal submission or anything like this, it should be acknowledged that SOCI, at the moment, does not support Microsoft servers. We would like to therefore invite those of you who have some expertise with ODBC or ADO to help us writing relevant backend. While investigating basic_path::append (please see my previous posts), I found something a bit suspect. template<class String, class Traits> template <class InputIterator> basic_path<String, Traits> & basic_path<String, Traits>::append( InputIterator first, InputIterator last ) { if ( detail::is_separator<path_type>( *first ) && detail::is_separator<path_type>( *(first+1) ) && *(first+2) == colon<path_type>::value ) first += 3; What if first == last? Worse, what if 'last' is the typical past-the-end (dereferencing undefined) value? Boost and the SunStudio 11 compiler on Solaris 10 - initial build results

Good morning, I hope that I'm not duplicating anybody's effort here - if I am, please get in touch so we can coordinate said effort. Anyway, to the subject at hand. About a year ago I posted a few results of my subsequently aborted attempt of getting Boost to work with the SunStudio 8/5.5 SUN compiler. Just about the only library I managed to get to work was the smart_ptr library. This still stands - I'm getting the impression that that particular compiler ran into even more hiccups with later versions of Boost. I've finally managed to get myself a decent spec SUN workstation and thanks to SUN now providing SunStudio 11 for the cost of a download, the latest compiler as well. Just got the whole shebang installed and attempted to compile boost without any configuration apart from adding the compiler to my path. The result looks pretty good so far - there are still a couple of compilation issues (most seem to be centred around type_traits/is_enum.hpp) and several link failures. I'll be looking into these hopefully over the next couple of weeks. So far, the overall results look a lot better compared to Studio 8 - after a build of the 'state' target with the basic sunpro tool set and absolutely no changes to the existing 1.33.1 configuration, bjam reports the following: ...failed updating 360 targets... ...skipped 192 targets... ...updated 877 targets... IME that's a massive improvement over results I got previously. Once I got to look into the problems above I should be able to set up a regular regression test and provide the results but I'm probably getting a tad ahead of myself... Regards, Timo

"Small buffer optimization" for boost::function?

Good <time-of-day>! Why not use 'small buffer optimization' for boost::function? Most of allocations are 8-16 bytes - an optimal size for SBO. This optimization will make boost::function _much_ faster - in one of our project boost::function is responsible for 15% of the whole processor time. PS: it will also be nice if something like http://www.codeproject.com/cpp/FastDelegate.asp will be included in Boost (and possibly in TR2). [serialization] VC7.1 STL facet deletion bug when overloading operators new/delete

Hello! I'm having an assertion failure when working with xml_oarchive. The problem is that in xdebug library header, _NEW_CRT is defined as another operator new. All standard facets are created using _NEW_CRT. But my application overload operators new/delete/new[]/delete[], So when _DELETE_CRT is called to delete the facet created in basic_text_oprimitive.ipp : 90 The code is: archive_locale.reset( add_facet( std::locale::classic(), new codecvt_null<BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME OStream::char_type> ) It raises an assertion failure, since it wasnt used the same operator for creating and deleting the object. This assertion only occurs when _DEBUG is defined. The workaround I used was to replace new for _NEW_CRT, but it will certainly only work for my STL. This "different operator new" is only used for facets in the VC7.1 STL. The boost I'm using is the one in cvs (downloaded yesterday). Thanks in advance, -- Felipe Magno de Almeida

Issues addressed: * All metafunctions that can be instantiated in user code have been registered with Boost.Typeof (see typeof.cpp for a test case). Registration of each metafunction occurs at the end of the header file in which the metafunction is declared, as per the "don't pay for what you don't use" policy. * The BOOST_MPL_AUX_TYPEOF_REGISTER_TYPE_C macro, defined in <boost/mpl/aux_/typeof/register_type_c.hpp>, enables one to register metafunctions that have the following form: template < typename ValueType , ValueType N1 , ValueType N2 , ... > struct metafunction { ... }; This macro is currently used to register rational_c, mixed_number_c, and complex_number_c; it is hoped that vector_c, list_c, range_c, and integral_c will also be registered by it. (The _C suffix indicates that the macro is to be used to register types ending in _c.) * I also suspect that the recent problem with double_::aux::get_value() is one of endianness. Unfortunately I don't know which combination of macros will detect Solaris. Therefore, BOOST_MPL_CFG_IS_LITTLE_ENDIAN, defined in <boost/mpl/aux_/config/endian.hpp>, is currently set to zero. (Double-check me if I named it correctly.) * In case no one has noticed--and judging from the contents of pqs3_0_0.zip, this seems to be the case--there is now a math::inverse metafunction, so you don't need to roll your own reciprocal<>. Multiple build errors of boost 1.33.1 on Linux

Hello, I tried to compile boost with gcc 3.4.x and 4.0.2 on Linux. With the latter I finally managed to build boost but let's come to this later. I tried gcc 3.4.2 and 3.4.4 both producing the following errors: `.L17959' referenced in section `.rodata' of bin/boost/libs/regex/build/libboost_regex.so/gcc/release/shared-linkable-true/ instances.o: defined in discarded section `.gnu.linkonce.t._ZN5boost9re_detail12perl_matcherIN9__gnu_cxx17__normal_iterator IPKcSsEESaINS_9sub_matchIS6_EEENS_12regex_traitsIcNS_16cpp_regex_traitsIcEEEEE15match_startmarkEv' of bin/boost/libs/regex/ build/libboost_regex.so/gcc/release/shared-linkable-true/instances.o ... see the complete logfile at http://lospalmos.net/boost-logs/boost-gcc-3.4.4.log This happens with different versions of binutils. With gcc4 these linker errors vanished, but I figured out that there are hardcoded depencies on libicu even when the build system claims that it has switched ICU off. So the log says: Building Boost.Regex with the optional Unicode/ICU support disabled. Please refer to the Boost.Regex documentation for more information (and if you don't know what ICU is then you probably don't need it). but later I found that errors on 8 targets: /usr/lib/gcc/i586-unknown-linux-gnu/4.0.2/../../../../i586-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/ld: cannot find -licui18n collect2: ld returned 1 exit status see the complete log at http://lospalmos.net/boost-logs/boost-gcc-4.0.2.log I "fixed" this by installing ICU but still consider it a bug.
