1.)[ With MSVC8 I have to explicitly #define BOOST_TYPEOF_COMPLIANT in order to enable the type 'void' to be registered. A bug? 2.) Shouldn't there be a forwarding header in the boost directory so the user can #include <boost/typeof.hpp> instead of #include <boost/typeof/typeof.hpp> ? 3.) There are numerous tab-characters in the source (not that I care much, but while we're at it)... Regards, Tobias

Can't understand how the BOOST_PP_REPEAT_FROM_TO example works]

Hi everyone, I'm new to boost but I did search the group as thoroughly as I could before asking this. Anyway, the documentation gives this as an example: #include <boost/preprocessor/cat.hpp> #include <boost/preprocessor/repetition/repeat_from_to.hpp> #define DECL(z, n, text) BOOST_PP_CAT(text, n) = n; BOOST_PP_REPEAT_FROM_TO(5, 10, DECL, int x) /* expands to: int x5 = 5; int x6 = 6; int x7 = 7; int x8 = 8; int x9 = 9; */ What confuses me is that BOOST_PP_REPEAT_FROM_TO expands to BOOST_PP_CAT and so does DECL yet after expanding DECL to BOOST_PP_CAT the (comeau) preprocessor continues to expand BOOST_PP_CAT to give the desired result. However, in the following code: #define CONCAT_1(a, b) CONCAT_1_D(a, b) #define CONCAT_1_D(a, b) a ## b #define CONCAT_2(a, b) CONCAT_2_D(a, b) #define CONCAT_2_D(a, b) a ## b #define AB(c, x, y) CONCAT_ ## c(x,y) CONCAT_1(A, B(1, p, q)) we find that we get: CONCAT_1(p,q) Only by changing the code to: CONCAT_1(A, B(2, p, q)) // note the 2 rather than 1 do we get our desired result: pq Can someone explain what I'm not understanding here (this isn't in my usual field of work)? Shared_ptr reference link instead of reference counter

Can the boost::shared_ptr be configured to use reference link instead of reference counter? If not, does boost have a smart pointer that uses reference link logic? See following example: http://code.axter.com/cow_ptr.h The above smart pointer uses a reference linking logic instead of a reference counter. I originally had the above smart pointer using reference counting logic, but it performed poorly during initialization, because of the call to new. I notice boost::shared_ptr has similar poor performance during initialization. Other than the increase object size, does anyone know any other reason why the boost::shared_ptr shouldn't be using reference link logic instead of reference counting? In another question, a couple of members recommended that I define BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR to increase the boost::shared_ptr performance, and it did. It also increased the performance of the other smart pointers. If BOOST_SP_USE_QUICK_ALLOCATOR does such a good job in increasing performance, why is it not defined by default? What is its down side? (if any) I notice a very odd result when testing on VC++ 7.1 using the build-in STL library that comes with VC++ with the following test code: http://code.axter.com/copy_ptr.h http://code.axter.com/cow_ptr.h http://code.axter.com/shape_test.h http://code.axter.com/boost_ptr_containers/main.cpp The above test code actually perform poorly when using vector :: reserve. It takes more time to populate the container when the reserve function is called. This happens with all the tested containers except vector<copy_ptr> If I use STLport, than I get expected results, where the code calling reserve performance better than the code not calling reserve. Can anyone else test this to see if they get similar results, and if so, does anyone have any idea what MS's STL code could be doing wrong? Thanks

Is there any way to query a stream_socket for its connection state? Also when a connection is closed by a peer during a read operation what error should be expected? eof, not_connected, fault, operation_aborted all seem reasonable.
