I have looked at macstl before and I appreciate what they are doing. Much of it seems to be implementation advantages, however (ie vectorized ops). > Its got a slightly restrictive license, but has valarrays and > similar fixed > size alternatives. A more open license would be nice. I have also looked at macstl's statarray class (I think this is the class your referring to). This violates much of the restrictions that the STL places on std::valarray to reducing aliasing however. > FWIW wrapping simple C arrays and using 'restrict' seems to work as > well in > many optimising compilers I've looked at on the PC. > > Something like macstl wins when you have longer operations that can > make use > of expression templates. Simple C arrays with the restrict keyword work well but all numeric operations have to be hand coded. std::valarray has convenient syntax but the user must pay for a memory allocation at each object creation which will dominate the runtime for smaller sized arrays. My own motivation is operations in space-time where I am repetitively doing complex numeric operations in 3 and 4 tuple space. Another example off of the top of my head could be those doing graphics who always use 4x4 matrices. What I am proposing is an interface that mirrors std::valarray that has been adjusted for those whose sizes are constant and known at compile-time. By keeping the interface as close to std::valarray as possible, I believe it makes it easy for users to adopt when appropriate and it maintains the restrictions placed on std::valarray to reduce aliasing for implementors as well as allowing for the elimination of temporaries (expression templates). The interface is what I am placing the most emphasis on. The claimed performance increase over std::valarray it solely due to the elimination of the memory allocation that std::valarray has to perform during object construction. (This is not an implementation trick, just a direct result of the interface.) The potential performance increase comes from various places most notably from the fact that certain compilers will unroll loops when the number of iterations are known at compile time (which is the case here). My particular implementation uses full expression templates to eliminate temporaries in the same manner as gcc's std::valarray. > I'd LOVE to see something like MacSTL developed for Boost. I > haven't really > been following MTL recently, but some smart people are working on > it behind > the scenes. I'm hoping that can be used as a framework for an > alternative. I would love to vectorized version in boost as well and looking into it is a definite todo but it is my understanding that there is some overhead associated with getting into the vector unit and due to the favored small element size of what I am proposing, the overhead may not be worth it. It is worth looking into however. Lastly, I am new to boosts procedures for proposals and the like so I apologize in advance if I end up needing some hand-holding during this process. Mike

pqs_3_0_5 physical quantities now in the vault
by Andy Little 29 Jan '06

29 Jan '06

Hi all, pqs_3_0_5 is now available in the "Physical Quantities Units" directory in the boost vault. pqs_3_0_5 hs been formally tested (including <libs/pqs/ test> and <libs/pqs/examples> ) on VC7.1, VC8, gcc3.2, gcc4.01. I hope to request a formal review of pqs shortly. All comments welcome The major change in pqs_3_0_5 is that first draft documentation has been added. Below is a copy of the index in the pqs_3_0_5 documentation. Introduction Acknowledgements Rationale Definition of terms t1_quantity - Quick overview of features and useage t1_quantity - Macros t1_quantity - Concepts t1_quantity - Class definition t1_quantity - Functions and operations t1_quantity - Associated types ** Predefined t1_quantities included in pqs Adding new predefined t1_quantities ** Configuring pqs ** ( **Section is are very incomplete in pqs_3_0_5) ToDo list for pqs_3_0_6----------- Ful quota of constants and constants documentation needs to be added. Code and documentation for angles need to be added. Should angles be in boost::math namespace ? A full inventory of pre-defined quantities as laid out in Appendix B.8 and B.9 of NIST Guide for the Use of the International System of Units(SI). pqs_3_0_5 has a (reasonably sized) sample selection of these but not all. Typeof registration needs to be sorted according to whatever is decided. regards Andy Little

Interest in static-sized valarray
by Michael Tegtmeyer 28 Jan '06

28 Jan '06

Hello, I am trying to guage interest in a fixed sized version of valarray. I frequently found myself using small(-ish) compile-time known sized numeric arrays that don't justify the overhead of operator new in std::valarray but needed the math interface that valarray provided. I wrote a static-sized version of valarray for this purpose. It is modeled after std::valarray and implements about 90% of valarray's interface (obviously resizing is not included, neither is gslice due to the result not being known at compile time). Examples of it's use are: float _v[10] = {...}; size_t _i[5] = {...}; cvalarray<float,10> v1(_v); cvalarray<float,5> v2 = v1[cslice<0,5,2>()]; v1[cslice<0,3,3>()] = 0.0f; cvalarray<size_t,5> ind(_i); cvalarray<float,5> cvalB = v1[ind]; v2 *= (v2 + v1) / 2.0; //all of the usual math ops I have a complete implementation that models std::valarray in every possible way (with compile-time known limitations) including expression-template support for the numeric ops. My testing indicates a decent performance increase over gcc4's valarray for small number of elements <1000. If anyone has any interest, I'll put together some docs and throw it in the sandbox. [Boost-bugs] [ boost-Bugs-1417361 ] transform_iterator documentation ignores operator->
by SourceForge.net 28 Jan '06

28 Jan '06

Bugs item #1417361, was opened at 2006-01-28 13:58 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1417361&group_… Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: iterator Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Eelis (eelis) Assigned to: David Abrahams (david_abrahams) Summary: transform_iterator documentation ignores operator-> Initial Comment: In the transform_iterator documentation, the "abstract" section states that "The transform iterator adapts an iterator by modifying the operator* to apply a function object to the result of dereferencing the iterator and returning the result.". It seems a bit strange to me to mention operator* but not operator->, which is modified in the exact same way. Then, in the "synopsis" section, operator* is listed but operator-> is not, even though it is definitely part of the interface (otherwise transform_iterator cannot model the concepts that it claims to model in the "models" section on the same page). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1417361&group_… ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [statechart] Ready for addition to main CVS
by Andreas Huber 28 Jan '06

28 Jan '06

Dear Boosters I believe I have addressed all the important issues that were reported during formal review of the Boost.Statechart library (then proposed as boost::fsm). Although there's still a lot to do, I think that the current version is stable enough to be added to the main CVS. All reviewers (and anyone else interested) are invited to verify that the issues that have been put forth have been taken care of appropriately: http://boost-sandbox.sf.net/libs/statechart Given Thomas Witt's cutoff date for additions of new libraries (February 8th) and the roughly one week needed to move the statechart directories from the sandbox CVS to the main CVS (can only be done by source forge staff), I must ask people to come forward with their questions/concerns before February 1st. Should anyone need more time, please let me know immediately by following up to this post. Thanks & Regards, -- Andreas Huber When replying by private email, please remove the words spam and trap from the address shown in the header.

BOOST_SLIST_HEADER
by Robert Ramey 28 Jan '06

28 Jan '06

I've noticed that the following has been added to the config/stdlib/libstdcpp3.hpp #if defined(__GLIBCXX__) || (defined(__GLIBCPP__) && __GLIBCPP__>=20020514) // GCC >= 3.1.0 # define BOOST_STD_EXTENSION_NAMESPACE __gnu_cxx # define BOOST_HAS_SLIST # define BOOST_HAS_HASH # define BOOST_SLIST_HEADER <ext/slist> # define BOOST_HASH_SET_HEADER <ext/hash_set> # define BOOST_HASH_MAP_HEADER <ext/hash_map> #endif My question is: How is BOOST_SLIST_HEADER intended to be used. At first I thought that one was expected to do something like the following: #ifdef BOOST_HAS_SLIST #include BOOST_SLIST_HEADER #endif But since BOOST_SLIST_HEADER is only defined in config/stdlib/libstdcpp3.hpp other libraries that support define BOOST_HAS_SLIST. On the otherhand if one has to use: #if defined(__GLIBCXX__) || (defined(__GLIBCPP__) && __GLIBCPP__>=20020514) // GCC >= 3.1.0 then whats point of defining BOOST_SLIST_HEADER rather than just using #include <ext/slist> What should I be doing here? Test with MSVC 8 C4180 warning const cannot be applied to a typedef
by Paul A Bristow 28 Jan '06

28 Jan '06

Test at 13 Jan 2006 MS moans in basic_cstring.hpp at value_type operator[]( size_type index ) const; value_type at( size_type index ) const; "C4180 qualifier applied to function type has no meaning; ignored" A qualifier, such as const, is applied to a function type defined by typedef. Example Copy Code// C4180.cpp // compile with: /W1 /c typedef int *FuncType(void); // the const qualifier cannot be applied to the function type FuncType const FuncType f; // C4180 Does this mean it wants a typedef const_value_type instead? Meanwhile, I have added to suppress_warnings.hpp # pragma warning(disable: 4224) // nonstandard extension used : formal parameter 'tm' was previously defined as a type tm needs renaming? # pragma warning(disable: 4180) // qualifier applied to function type has no meaning; ignored Suppresses the clutter. (And I feel strongly that although trivial, Boost should try hard to avoid spurious warnings like these for those whose Standards demand they use the pickiest warning level). (Speaking boost-wide, I note that warning C4127: conditional expression is constant is very common and I cannot conceive of when it could possibly be helpful. Also warning C4800: 'int' : forcing value to bool 'true' or 'false' (performance warning) Should a 'certain to be included' boost file 'globally' disable at least these two warnings? Insert into boost config? ) Paul PS MSVC 8.0 notes: Conversion wizard runs fine with no errors. (some 3 conversion warnings which look unimportant). There are very many warnings like: i:\boost-06-01-13-0500\boost\test\results_collector.hpp(79) : warning C4275: non dll-interface class 'boost::noncopyable_::noncopyable' used as base for dll-interface class 'boost::unit_test::singleton<Derived>' with [ Derived=boost::unit_test::results_collector_t ] i:\boost-06-01-13-0500\boost\noncopyable.hpp(22) : see declaration of 'boost::noncopyable_::noncopyable' Should this be disabled somewhere too? -- Paul A Bristow Prizet Farmhouse, Kendal, Cumbria UK LA8 8AB Phone and SMS text +44 1539 561830, Mobile and SMS text +44 7714 330204 mailto: pbristow(a)hetp.u-net.com http://www.hetp.u-net.com/index.html http://www.hetp.u-net.com/Paul%20A%20Bristow%20info.html

Hi all, this is just a reminder for all interested people to possibly submit a review for the Fixed Strings library written by Reece Dunn. The review is half over and the response we've got by now is far from sufficient to allow to make a proper judgement. So please try to find some time and write about your findings here. Please find the original announcement below. Regards Hartmut Review Manager --------------------------------- Hi all, The review of the proposed Boost Fixed Strings library written by Reece Dunn starts today (January 19th, 2006) and ends January 28th, 2006. You can download the library here: http://tinyurl.com/czrh9 (http://boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php?action=downloadfile&filename=fi xed_string.zip&directory=Strings%20-%20Text%20Processing&) --------------------------------------------------- About the library: The fixed_strings library is a buffer-overrun safe version of using fixed-size character array data buffers. It provides integration with the C API allowing strcpy, et. al. to be used safely for a fixed string and provides a basic_string interface allowing easy migration to C++ strings. There is also a formatter function object allowing (w)sprintf to be used in a single line! Example: boost::fixed_string< 5 > hi; strcpy( hi, "Hello World" ); hi.push_back( '!' ); std::cout << hi << std::endl; std::cout << boost::formatter( "Meine %s Welt!", "kleine" ) << std::endl; output: Hello Meine kleine Welt! --------------------------------------------------- Please always state in your review, whether you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library! Additionally please consider giving feedback on the following general topics: - What is your evaluation of the design? - What is your evaluation of the implementation? - What is your evaluation of the documentation? - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? - Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? - How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? - Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain?
